Schatz

Ruben Louis Schatz age 89 of Liberty died Sunday February 21, 2016 at Liberty Health Care.

Ruben was born December 24, 1926 in Burton, Texas in Washington County. He was the son of the late Otto Schatz and Minnie Knipstein Schatz. Ruben joined the US Army in April of 1945, serving in Engineering Company. He deployed to the Tuazon, Philippines for over thirteen months and was honorably discharged in December of 1946. He worked as a farmer until 1954 and then moved to Houston working in various jobs. He married Ella Mae Hopmann on August 5, 1956 at St. James Lutheran Church at New Wehdam Washington County Texas. He later went on to work for and retire from the US Postal Service as a letter carrier with over twenty-eight years of service. Ruben moved to Liberty in 1993 and as resided here since.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his wife Ella Mae Schatz. In addition he was preceded by his brothers: Louis Schatz and his wife Elsie; Otto Schatz Jr. and his wife Felba; sisters: Baby Schatz; Irene Hartfiel and her husband Otto.

Ruben leaves behind to cherish his memory his son Larry Schatz and his fiancée Mary Shoemaker, sister-in-law Lucille Buckhorn, his beloved grandchildren: Cody Schatz and his wife Kristin; Rachel Alfaro and her husband Juan. In addition he leaves his four great- grandchildren: Greyson Estep; Paisley Schatz; Pace Schatz, and Sawyer Alfaro, extended family: Hannah Shoemaker and Laura Schatz, and a host of nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A visitation for Ruben will be held Thursday February 25, 2016 from 6-8 P.M. at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis Liberty, Texas. Funeral Services to be held 10AM Friday February 26, 2016 at the funeral home with burial to follow in Fairlawn cemetery.

Hendricks

Joann Irene Deshayes Hendricks, 69, of Dayton, died Monday, February 15, 2016, at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

Graveside service will be held at later date at the Mount Pisgah cemetery in Woodville. Local arrangements are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Joann was born October 8, 1946 in Lincoln, Nebraska, to parents; Lawrence Deshayes and Betty Ross, a former resident of Woodville, and has resided in Dayton for the past 20 years.

Mrs. Hendricks was preceded in death by her father: Lawrence Deshayes, sister: Shirley Kelley, and brother: David Deshayes. She is survived by daughter: Becky Slaughter and husband Michael of Dayton, mother: Betty Ross Kessner of Dickinson, stepmother: Darlene Deshayes, brother: Jerry Boatman, sisters: Debbie Phillips, Peggy Davis, and Evelyn Boatman, granddaughter: Lawren Slaughter, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Caninenberg

Vernon Ray Caninenberg, age 83 of Liberty, died February 20, 2016 in Baytown, TX.

Vernon was born January 24, 1933 in Taylor, TX, son of the late Fritz and Clara Marie Kreig Caninenberg. Vernon graduated from Thrall High School and then received his degree in accounting from Lamar University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 where he received the National Defense Service Medal while stationed in Alaska. Vernon moved from Hankamer to Liberty in 1955 where he was the Assistant Post Master for thirty-three years. After retiring he opened his booking keeping and tax service where he served many clients. Vernon was a life time member of the Liberty Fire Department where he dedicated his service to the community for fifty plus years. He was also a member of the Elk’s Lodge and the Taylor American Legion Post 39. He loved to camp and loved his blue bonnets. But mostly he loved his children and grandchildren.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, wife; Reta Caninenberg, and sisters; Anita Wolfe and Ruby Abshier. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his daughters; Debbie Polasek and husband Wes of Liberty, Lynn Neely and husband Bill of Liberty, son; Kent Caninenberg of Liberty, sisters; Louise Hrncir of Pearland, TX, Doris Hardi of Elgin, TX, Laverne Haag of Austin, TX, first wife; Diane Caninenberg of Liberty, Grandchildren; Chris, B.J., Angie, Lamar, step-grandchildren; Tiffany, Laura, Jessie, Krystal, Elizabeth and great-grandchildren; Drew, Cooper and Adelyn.

Services for Vernon Ray Caninenberg will be Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at 2pm at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 North Travis, Liberty, TX with burial to follow at Cooke cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 23, 2016 from 5pm to 8pm in the chapel at Allison’s. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in Vernon’s memory to the Liberty Fire Department or the Liberty Elk’s lodge.

Lowe

Janet Marie Lowe of Thicket, died Thursday February 18, 2016 in Lumberton. She was 22.

A service of remembrance will be held on Monday February 22, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at West End Baptist Church 13189 Cotton Rd. Saratoga, TX, with Reverend Keith da la Moriniere and Reverend Bruce Crosby officiating. Interment will follow at Felps cemetery in Thicket.

The family will be receiving friends on Sunday February 21, 2016 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at West End Baptist Church 13189 Cotton Rd Saratoga, TX.

She was born November 24, 1993 in Beaumont, TX, to Walter Lowe and Dawn Bollweg Lowe. She had lived in Thicket, and was a student at Lamar University of Beaumont.

Janet was involved in many activities, such as Super Bowl of Caring to re-stock S.E.T.X. Food Bank. She was current president of Social Workers Association of Lamar University of Beaumont, where she was studying to received her Batchelor's Degree in Social Work. She also interned for C.P.S. Agency in Lumberton. Janet graduated Salutatorian from West Hardin High School of Saratoga. She was also student leader of Crossfire at West Hardin High School and participated in "Do The Right Thing" National Anti- Violence Program for middle school kids, and was a member of West End Baptist Church of Saratoga.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Richard Lowe, Thomas Bollweg, and Ernie Mish. She is survived by her parents, Walter and Dawn Lowe of Thicket, brother, Lucas Lowe of Saratoga. Grandparents, Elaine Lowe of Saratoga, and Janet Mish of Carol Stream IL. Niece, McKenna Lowe of Saratoga.

Aunts, Robin Johnson and husband Jeff of Watertown, TN, Julie Carlson and husband Paul of South Elgin, IL. Cousins, Justin Johnson and wife Kelsie and son Brantlee of Watertown, TN, Caleb Johnson of Watertown, TN, and Jacob and Hailey Carlson of South Elgin IL, and a host of loving friends and colleagues who will miss her very much.

Serving as pallbearers are Lucas Lowe, Josh Bowman, Justin Johnson, Caleb Johnson, Matthew Wilson and Jacob Carlson.

Cherry

J.L. Cherry of Kountze, Texas, died Saturday February 13, 2016 at Harbor Hospice of Beaumont. He was 81.

A service of remembrance will be held on Wednesday February 17, 2016 at 10:00A.M. at Emmanuel Baptist Church of Honey Island, with Reverend Mel Rowell officiating. Interment will follow at Holland cemetery in Kountze.

The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday February 16, 2016 from 5:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. at Emmanuel Baptist Church of Honey Island.

He was preceded in death by his wife Wava Dee Cherry. Brothers, Homer Cherry, Charles Cherry, Doug Cherry, and sister Anna Rachel Cherry.

Survivors are son, Danny Cherry and wife Debra of Kirbyville. Daughters, Donna Dryden and husband Don of Lumberton, and Jennifer Lewis and husband Terry of Kountze. Brothers, William Cherry of Baton Rouge, Mike Cherry and wife Marla of Honey Island, and Ernest Cherry of Honey Island, and sister Sheila Ener and husband Douglas of Honey Island.

Grandchildren are Dawson Williford, Sarah Lewis, William Williford, Kelsey Lewis, Hunter Williford, Christopher Cherry, Rodney Cherry, Kyle Ellis, Jada Simon and Justin Whittington.

Great grandchildren are Kade Simon, Rowdy Cherry, Eva Cherry and Ava Whittington.

Serving as pallbearers are Danny Cherry, Rodney Cherry, Dwayne Williford, Hunter Williford William Williford, Dawson Williford and Mikey Cherry.

Mullins

Thomas Watson Mullins Jr, age 91 of Liberty, died peacefully on February 16, 2016 in Houston, TX.

Tommy Mullins, the oldest of three children, was born June 12, 1924 in Silsbee, TX to Hallie Mae and Thomas “Moon” Mullins.

After graduating from Liberty High School, Tommy joined the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served for three years, most of that time aboard the destroyer USS Kendrick. He was one of “the greatest generation” and a proud member of the VFW and the “Tin Can Sailors”. Tommy was involved with Chevrolet and General Motors Company his entire professional life. He truly was a “Chevy Man”. He lived the last years of his life in Liberty with his wife, Patsy. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Liberty and a devoted member of the Men’s Bible Class.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters; Billie Blanche Chambers and Patricia Watson. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife; Patsy Mullins, four daughters; Lynn Mullins, Brenda Lowe, Sandra Mullins, Susan Dean and husband Bill, step-children; Terrell Dismukes and Lettye Dismukes, grandchildren; Lauren Fornes, Chasen Finkelstein, Brad Lowe, Keli and Kyle Dean, Hilary and Heath Hernandez, and great-grandchildren; Hudson, Stone Brick and Remi Grace.

Services for Thomas Watson Mullins Jr will be Friday, February 19, 2016 at 2pm at the First United Methodist Church in Liberty with burial to follow at the City of Liberty cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, February 18, 2016 from 5pm to 7pm at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 North Travis, Liberty, TX.

Holcomb

Juanita Long Holcomb, 76, of Dayton, died Thursday, February 4, 2016, at the Kindred Hospital in Baytown.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 19, 2016, at the Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held from noon p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Juanita was born January 9, 1940 in Gary, to parents; William H. Long and Edna Lee Tidwell, a former resident of Crosby, and has resided in Dayton for the past 31 years. She was a homemaker, former employee of John Keating Ford, and member of Trinity Baptist Church. She also enjoyed gardening, writing, animals, dominoes, and collecting.

Mrs. Holcomb was preceded in death by her father: William H. Long, mother: Edna Lee Tidwell Hoke, father of her children: Charles Hutchins, and sisters: Jennie Ruth, Elsie Faye, and Anna Lee. She is survived by her husband: Donald Holcomb of Liberty, son: Charles Edward Hutchins of Cameron, daughters: Patricia Ann Hutchins of Porter, Marie Fuson and husband Jim of Cameron, Wanda Faye Hutchins of Dayton, and Rita Marleen Bennett of Dayton, 11 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, her fur ever love: Missy Girl, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Pruitt

Judge Glenn Travis Pruitt, 83, of Dayton died Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Magnolia Place Healthcare, Liberty, Texas.

Services for Judge Pruitt will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 20, 2016 at First Baptist Church, Dayton.

Interment will follow at Palms Memorial Park cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday evening at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers are Leon Wilson, Kenneth Holbrook, Alan D. Conner, Steven Holbrook, Jeff Lambright, and Casey Hicks. Honorary pallbearers are Gene Brown, Neal Iverson, Bill Johnson, Gentry Rigby, Lester Ray Wisegerber, the Dayton Police Department, and the Liberty Sheriff’s Department.

Glenn Travis Pruitt was born November 29, 1932 in Leggett, Texas to parents, L. A. “Red” Pruitt and Emma Lee McDonald Pruitt. A lifelong resident of Dayton, he graduated from Dayton High School in 1951 and attended Texas A&M where he played football. He served in the United States Army and played football while stationed at Fort Bliss. Glenn later received his Bachelor of Science degree from Sam Houston State College. Glenn was a very well respected business man in Dayton. Glenn co-owned and operated Dayton Air Conditioning and U-Do-It Hardware with Gentry Rigby before buying Mr. Rigby’s interest and continuing to run the businesses, and later, Dayton Washateria until 2014. Glenn’s favorite hobbies were Ham radio, gardening, driving Ms. Barbara around Dayton in his Model A and football. Judge Pruitt served as Municipal Court Judge for the City of Dayton from 1994 until 2012 and as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 4 from 1997 until 2010.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Glenn Pruitt; and brother, Elmer Lee Pruitt. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Lee Walker Pruitt of Dayton; his daughter, Suzanne Hicks and husband William of Dayton; granddaughter, Samantha Glenn Kimball of Dayton; step-grandchildren, Jennifer Sanchez, Casey Hicks and Caylin Hicks; step-great-grandchild, Georgia Sanchez; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

For those who desire memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.

Roberts

Roger J. Roberts was born to Roger Calvin Roberts and Sally Smith on July 24, 1927. On January 29, 2016 he went home to be with Jesus.

He was born and reared in Rayburn, Texas. He was a World War II Veteran. He was a logger by trade and worked construction work at Baroid in Ames, Texas. The remainder of his adult life he live in Dayton and Liberty, Texas.

Roger Roberts met and married Evelyn Joyce Bush and out of this union they had five children, he was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister, brother and daughter Carrie Jean Roberts.

He leaves to cherish his memories, three daughters: Jean Jordan of Liberty, Texas, Lovelly Roberts of Richmond California, and Patricia Roberts of Dayton, Texas. One son, Rogero (Buddy) Roberts, a special friend and son-in-law Charles Ray Trahan.

Also cherishing his memories is eight grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 19, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Wells Funeral Services in Althea P. Gibson Chapel, 300 Alabama Street, Liberty, Texas. Funeral Services Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Wells Funeral Services. Rev. Ronnie Henderson officiating.

Speer

Dale H. Speer, 74 of Hardin died Monday, February 15, 2016 in Beaumont, Texas.

Services for Mr. Speer’s service will be 2:30 p.m., Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Hardin United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Hardin Chapel cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at the church. Services are under the arrangement of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

Dale was born September 3, 1941 to parents, Frank and Bessie Speer. He was a lifelong resident of Hardin, a member of the Hardin High School class of 1959 and graduated from Texas Lutheran College in 1964. He was a long time employee of General Crude and Exxon. He also worked for Liberty Glass and PESCO. Dale was a former member of the Hardin Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and gardening. Most of all he loved being with his family.

Mr. Speer was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Anna Lee Green Speer. He is survived by his son, Kirk R. Speer of Hardin; his daughters, Debbie Beasley and husband Mike of Hardin, and Becca Speer and Kenny Collins of Hull; grandchildren, Anna Tristan, Dusty Beasley, Dale Eric Speer, and Curtis Speer; great-grandchildren, Emily, Erin, Landon, Jordan, and Clarissa; also other family members and friends.
