Is the Haunted Mansion based off a book? ›

The Disneyland Haunted Mansion was largely inspired by the Shipley-Lydecker House in Baltimore, Maryland, pictured in Decorative Art of Victoria's Era, a book found in the Walt Disney Imagineering Information Research Center in Glendale, California.

Walt and Imagineers like Harper Goff, Ken Anderson, Yale Gracey, Rolly Crump, Marc Davis, and Claude Coats decided to create a fully original storyline for the Haunted Mansion. But they initially envisioned the experience of visiting it in a totally different way than how it ended up.

Haunted Mansion Disneyland Exterior. The Mansion's antebellum exterior was designed to resemble the architecture found in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. The Victorian Shipley-Lydecker House in Shipley Hill, Maryland also inspired the design.

In the ride, which first opened in 1969 at Disneyland, guests walk through the gate and into the Mansion before being guided into “Doom Buggies” in which they ride through the haunted house and meet many ghosts along the way.
