Joseph A. Lorince, 94, of West Hazleton, passed away Saturday at St. Luke’s Manor, Hazleton.

Born in Tresckow on March 21, 1930, he was the son of the late John and Susan (Mizenko)
Lorince and lived in West Hazleton most of his life.

Joe was a 30-year retired reservist with theU.S. Navy, 1st class. He worked as a foreman for 30 years at General Foam, Hazleton, andworked at Walmart for several years, post-retirement.

He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his wife, Mary (Smolen) Lorince; sisters
Susan (Lorince) Michalyshin and Margarita(Lorince) Gomes; brothers, John, Stephen and
Richard Lorince; a granddaughter, Julia Maolucci; and son-in-law, Anthony Bottley.

Surviving is his brother, Michael, husband of Rose Marie Lorince of Kelayres; in addition to
Joe’s beloved children, Monica Maolucci and her husband, Vincent, New Jersey; Barbara
Bottley, Hazleton; Joanne Ciampi and her husband, Frank, Hazle Twp.; Jacqueline Lorince and
her partner, William Bone, Chester Springs; grandchildren, Michael Maolucci; Frank Ciampi Jr.
and his wife, Jessica; and Nina Bottley. He was also a great grandfather to Frank Jr. and Jessica’s
children, Aubree and Bryce. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, September 6 at 10 a.m.
in Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton. Interment will follow in
the parish cemetery.

A public viewing will be held Friday from 9 a.m. to the time of service in Transfiguration
Church.

Kathleen S. Witanek, 87, formerly of West Green Street, West Hazleton, passed away Tuesday.

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Andrew Lawrence Pavlick, a devoted family man of deep faith and generosity, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on Friday.

Born in Jeansville on June 19, 1933, Andrew cherished every moment with his loved ones, whether at home, out to dinner, or on the many cruises they enjoyed together.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia; daughter, Mary Carol and her husband, Tom; granddaughters, Kaylee and Alexa; great-grandsons, Eli and Max; and his grand- and great-grand dogs, Leah, Duggar, Moe and George. Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, Caroline and Andrew; and his brother, Robert.

Andrew's legacy of love, generosity and unwavering commitment to his family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be profoundly missed.

Visitation will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., both at Transfiguration Church, 213 W. Green St., WestHazleton, PA18202.

Janet A Radziewicz, 89, formerly of West Hazleton, passed away Thursday at Providence Place in Drums where she had been residing.

Born in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Thelma Davis.

She was a graduate of Hazle Twp., Class of 1951, and prior to retiring she was employed at Thoren Industries.

She was an active, lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony.

Janet is survived by her daughters, Susan Larock (Richard); and Valerie Radziewicz; brother, Allen Davis (Marita); sister, Marilyn Gosdeck (Anthony); and her beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Her funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday in Christ Lutheran Church in Hazleton. Friends may call beginning at 9 a.m. in the church.

Frances Sacco, 99, of West Hazleton, passed away Sunday at the Laurels Senior Living Community, Hazleton, where she resided.

She was born in West Hazleton, daughter of the late William and Mary Nawracaj Rinkus and lived in West Hazleton for all of her life.

Frances was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her beloved husband, John Sacco; and two brothers, Walter and Norbert Rinkus.

Surviving are her beloved daughter, Gloria Scarlato and her husband, Charles, Norristown; beloved granddaughter, Amanda McClain and her husband, William, Blue Bell; beloved great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Cameron; and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Friday in the church.

Sophia B. Lapinsky, 94, of Hazle Twp., died Tuesday.

Preceding her death was her husband, Bernard Jr., on Aug. 1, 2014.

Born in West Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Anna (Gruszka) Betley.

She attended Hazle Twp. High School and was employed with Sears Roebuck Co. for 30 years as supervisor of the catalog telephone department.

Sophia was a choir directress and Eucharistic minister at the Holy Name of Jesus Church (Transfiguration Church) of West Hazleton and was active in many church functions. She volunteered for American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels and was a member of Hazleton Senior Citizens and Hazleton Senior Choice.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, John and Anthony Podraza, Louis, Walter, Stanley and Andrew Betley; and sisters, Mary Swindro, Josephine Zola and Agnes Petrosky.

Surviving are sisters, Anna Perkowski and Louise Mylet; children, David Lapinsky and wife, Elaine; Kathy (Lapinsky) Koch and husband, Henry; and Bernard Lapinsky III and wife, Anne; grandchildren, Michael Koch and wife, Melissa; Jeffrey Koch and wife, Michelle; Eric Koch and wife, Danielle; Kristina (Lapinsky) Abreu and husband, Miguel; Brian Lapinsky and wife, Shannon; and Emily Rose Lapinsky; and great-grandchildren, Jacob, Madeline, Henry, Oliver and Evelyn Koch; Jericho John Abreu; and Twyla Lapinsky.

The funeral will be held Monday in Holy Name of Jesus Church, West Hazleton. A calling hour will be at 9 a.m. followed by Mass at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Cecilia "Sis" Anderson, born on November 12, 1937, inHarwood, Pennsylvania, peacefully passed away on May 30, 2024, inHazleton, Pennsylvania, at the age of 86. She was known for her lively and caring spirit, hardworking nature, and her ability to bring joy and laughter to those around her.

Sis had a passion for gardening, arts & crafts, spending time outdoors, camping, solving puzzles, and cooking delicious meals. Her love for these activities brought happiness to her life and to those she shared them with.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Kathleen Badolato, granddaughters Amanda Walton, Audrey Walton, and Jessica Justofin, as well as her sister Irene Kapes. Sis was preceded in death by her mother Anna Yurkanin, father John Kapish, sister Rita Droniak, and brothers Francis Kapish, Joseph Kapes, and John Kapes.

Sis will be remembered for her fun-loving and spunky personality, her quirky sense of humor, and most of all, her deep love for her family and friends. She touched the lives of many with her kindness and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Harvey L. Vallati, 84, of Hazle Twp., passed away Saturday at his home.

He was born in Middletown, Dauphin County, and was the son of the late Batisto and Mae Stoner Vallati.

Harvey was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, with the rank of Private, where he served his country proudly.

He was previously employed at Barrett Haentjens & Co., Hazleton as a pump grinder.

Harvey was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church, Fox Manor, West Hazleton.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were his beloved wife, the former Lenore M. Hildenbrand, who died May 1, 2019; his son Harvey Vallati Jr and his daughter-in-law Brenda Vallati; sisters, Joyce Jackson and Jane Crone; and brothers, Bob and Jack Vallati.

Surviving are his beloved children, James and Barry Vallati; Helen Sowers and her husband Mike; Lenore Chippi and her husband Darren; Larencina Gorski and her husband Daniel; Robert Hildenbrand and his wife Donna; 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; one brother, Ronnie Vallati. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Faith Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Rodney Murphy, officiating. His public viewing will be held in the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday.

Stella D. Hyziak, 88, formerly of West Hazleton and Sugarloaf Twp., passed away Monday.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late John and Stella Skokoski Garbacik, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents was her beloved daughter, Stella Marie Markunas.

James was a veteran of World War II in the Army with the rank of Corporal in the Philippines Theatre of Operations where he served his country proudly.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 40 years by the Rubber Corporation of America, in Valmont Industrial Park as a foreman.

James was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents was his beloved wife, the former Theresa Gerone and one Brother, George Kukol.

Surviving are his beloved children: Kathleen Boris and her husband Bernard; George Kukol and his wife Michele; and James Kukol Jr and his wife Patricia. Seven Grandchildren: Derek Boris and his wife Rebecca; Alyssa Diroll and her husband J.P.; Brittany Guba and her husband Michael; Nicholas and Kristen Kukol; and David and Deanna. Nine Great-Grandchildren: Carter and Grant Boris; Kaylee and Syndney Diroll; Morgan Brittany and Connor; Sophia, Jackson, and Jace. Two Brothers: Richard Kukol and William Kukol and his wife Claudia. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Julia S. Shulenski passed away March 26 at Mountain City Nursing Home.

Born Feb. 22, 1936, and raised in Hazleton, she spent most of her adult life living here. The daughter of Lucille and Antek Shulenski, she was the last surviving child, having been preceded in death by her siblings, Laura, Tony, Larry and Teddy Shulenski. Fun and loving Julia will be missed by the next generations of her family.

A graveside memorial and internment will occur at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2024 in Calvary Cemetery, 49 S. Hunter Highway, Drums. All wishing to attend are to meet at the awning of the chapel of the cemetery by 9:50 am.

Esther Mondero, 94, of Beaver Meadows, passed away peacefully on Monday surrounded by her family at Mt. City Nursing Facility in Hazleton.

Born in Hazleton on March 27, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna Baran.

Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were her husband Harold Mondero,brothers John, Paul and Daniel Baran, sisters Pauline Eaglan and Marion Dougherty and great grandson Brandon Novatnak.

Surviving is her son Mark Mondero,daughters Marcia and her husband Walter Pilger and Michele Mondero all of Hazle Twp. Also surviving are her grandsons Robert Novatnak, Jr. and Walter Pilger, III and her brother Ernest Baran.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

He was born in West Hazleton, son of the late Bernard and Mary Szeliga Krzemien and resided in West Hazleton for all of his life.

Bernard was a veteran of the Army with the rank of Corporal serving his country proudly during the Korean War from 1953-1955.

Prior to his retirement, he had worked for Johns-Manville Corporation, in New Jersey for 33 years as a Boiler Operator and then retired from National Starch, in Bridgewater, New Jersey after 8 years.

Bernard was a life member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish, at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton where he was active in all church activities, and a Veterans Life Member of the National Association of Atomic Veterans.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were brothers: Edward Krzemien and his wife, Ann; Thomas Krzemien; and a Great-Nephew, Andrew Krzemien Jr.

Surviving are his brother, Leon Krzemien and his Wife Sharon, of El Paso, Texas, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, especially his cousin and Care-Giver, Jack Gawron, of West Hazleton and a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Krzemien, of Littleton, Colorado.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated Friday, March 22 at 10 AM in Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton by the Reverend Peter J. O'Rourke. His public viewing will be held in the church Friday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

Bernardine "Bernie" Hornick, 82, of Hazle Twp., died in her home on March 1 after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by family in her final days.

Bernie was the youngest daughter of 13 children born to John and Mary (Dzialo) Swiech.

Bernie worked several years in manufacturing, as well as other jobs in the Hazleton area. She was a devout Catholic and lifelong member of Holy Name of Jesus (Transfiguration) Parish, West Hazleton, and a graduate of Hazle Twp. High School. She prayed her rosary daily and without a doubt had a very special connection with the Lord. Bernie loved the outdoors and warm weather. She took pride in her garden and spent tireless hours decorating for the holidays. But her utmost joy was her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always had open doors in times of need. She never passed up the chance to give advice and support or throw a family packed holiday party so everyone could be together. She was the rock of the family.

Bernie is survived by her children, Karen Hornick Yance,Stamford, Conn.; Corinne (Dave) Lapinsky, Ringtown; and Kevin Hornick, Hazle Twp.; grandchildren, Tara (Dan), Vinnie, Brandon (Ashlee), Ian, Jolene (Mike) and Helena; great-grandchildren, Tacy, Tim, Nicholas, Willow, Olive and Michael; and sisters-in-law, cousins and many nieces and nephews.

Bernie was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Hornick; parents and siblings, Joseph, Mary Galski, Dorthy Kules, Edmond, Richard, Joan Jones, Daniel, John, also Leo I, Eva, Leo II and Blanche who died shortly after birth.

Funeral services will be held Thursday in Holy Name of Jesus (Transfiguration) Parish, 213 W. Green St., West Hazleton. All are welcome to attend a calling hour starting at 9 a.m. directly followed by a Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, 49 S Hunter Highway, Drums.

Eleanor D. Lashock, 96, formerly of West Hazleton passed away Thursday at The Manor at St. Luke Village, Hazleton, where she resided.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late Leo Lashock Sr. and Anna Lobitz Lashock, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Prior to her retirement, Eleanor was employed by Skippy Footwear in West Hazleton as a machine operator.

She was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Surviving are her cousin and caregiver, Frank Lobitz, Hazle Twp.; and nieces and nephews.

Ronald Christina,76, of West Hazleton, passed away the evening of Dec. 4 in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late Joseph and Margaret Hama Christina, and lived in West Hazleton for all of his life.

He was a graduate of West Hazleton High School, Class of 1965, then attended Bloomsburg State College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education.

Prior to his retirement, Ronald was employed by the Hazleton Area School District as an elementary education teacher and also was a coach for sporting events.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his brother, Dr. Robert Christina.

Surviving are his three beloved brothers, Edward Christina and his wife, Gin,Fredericksburg, Va.; Eugene Christina and his wife, Laurie, Milton; and Michael Christina and his wife, Barbara, Hazle Twp.; Ronald's companion, Deborah Verbitsky; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Robert J. Bator Sr., 98, of Wyomissing, formerly of Sinking Spring and West Hazleton, died peacefully of natural causes on Tuesday in Reading Hospital surrounded by his family. He was a resident in the Country Meadows of Wyomissing Retirement Community.

Born June 25, 1925, in West Hazleton, he was the son of the late Stanley J. Bator Sr. and Elizabeth (Bender Bator) Sisco and stepson of the late Nickolas Sisco and Anna C. (Evans Marshman) Bator.

In addition to his parents and stepparents, Robert was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy M. (Spangler) Bator, in 2015, with whom he shared nearly 71 years of marriage. They were married May 29, 1944, in North Carolina prior to Mr. Bator's deployment in World War II with the U.S. Marines to Midway and Okinawa. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Roberta; brothers, William J., Stanley J. Jr. and Joseph; a stepbrother, Stanley R.; and sisters, Mary and Eleanor Fritski and husband, William.

He was a graduate of West Hazleton High School, Class of 1943.

Robert was employed by Singer Sewing Machine Co. for 10 years and then by Prudential Insurance Co. for 30 years, where he achieved yearly "Million Dollar Sales Awards" prior to retiring in 1991. He was also president of the UFCW Local 8 for 15 years.

Robert raised three children and loved hunting, boating, water skiing, trips to Atlantic City and Florida and yearly family fishing vacations to Canada. He also enjoyed trips with his wife to Puerto Rico, Nassau and Denver. He was active as a coach and treasurer of the West Hazleton Little League and Biddy Basketball Association. He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish, West Hazleton.

He is survived by a daughter, June A. Becker and her husband, David, of Wernersville; two sons, Lawrence R. Bator and his wife, Rosemary, of Wilkes-Barre; and Robert J. Bator Jr. and his wife, Regina, of Wyomissing; four grandsons, Brian D. Becker and his wife, Alissa, of West Chester; Daran R. Becker and his wife, Amanda, of Villanova; Robert J. Bator III, Wyomissing; and Thomas M. Bator and his wife, Hannah, Westminster, Md.; and three great-granddaughters, Adriana, Ella and Willa Becker. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Catherine, widow of Chester Bartlinski, Hazleton; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Friday at Holy Name of Jesus Parish, 213 W. Green St., West Hazleton, PA 18202. The service will be preceded by a visitation at the church that will begin at 11 a.m. and run until the time of the service. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Drums.

Santina "Sandy" Welsh

Santina "Sandy" Welsh passed away peacefully Friday in her 97th year at Fritzingertown Senior Living Community, where she had been a resident for the last 3½ years.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Antonine Savoca.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Kenneth Welsh, in 1999; stepdaughter, Shelley Welsh; brother, Joseph Savoca; and sisters, Gilda Lloyd and Peppina Savoca.

Sandy is survived by her stepson and caretaker, Gary Welsh and his wife, Patricia; and a niece and great-nephew.

Sandy was born and raised in Berwick and was employed by Morris-Cut Rate of Berwick during her early life and later by Wagner Electric, a division of Tung Sol Hazleton. For most of her life she excelled at the role of homemaker, where she enjoyed keeping everything "fire engine clean."

Baking and cooking were her passion and she loved to share her wonderful dishes and goodies with family, friends, neighbors, health care providers and anyone she thought would enjoy them well into her 90s. Sandy was very independent, quite active on the computer and one of those people who never stopped growing and learning and never allowed herself to grow old by always staying young at heart and mind. She always had such wide-eyed enthusiasm for the latest technology and would stay active reading the newspaper, magazines and watching the news everyday but her guilty pleasures included watching nostalgic game shows and staying current with the latest tabloid gossip. Sandy's passion for attention to detail, planning and organization was an inspiration to her stepson, Gary, which he attests to being a great benefit in his life. Sandy loved life and lived a long, happy and healthy one. We are so thankful for these, and the many blessings bestowed upon her. May she rest in everlasting peace.

John J. (Fogie-Jackie) Fogash, Age 75, of Beaver Meadows passed away Monday morning at his home.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late John and Anna Dutzer Fogash and grandson of the late Joseph and Anna Baran Dutzer. He resided in Beaver Meadows for all of his life.

Fogie was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, with the rank of Boatswain Mate-3rd Class, stationed aboard the USS Raleigh, in Norfolk, Virginia, where he served his country proudly.

Prior to his retirement, Fogie was employed for over 30 years as a radio technician at Tobyhanna Army Depot.

Surviving are his beloved Aunt Helen Mandzak and several cousins.

Denise K. Zellner, 66, of Hazleton passed away Saturday.

She was born in Hazleton, the daughter of the late John C. Zellner, who died on Dec. 14, 2002, and Dolores D. Degutis Zellner, who died July 15, 2018.

Denise had previously worked with the United Rehabilitation Service in Hazleton.

She was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her sister Anita and her twin brother John J. Zellner, who died September 2, 2019.

Surviving is her beloved sister, Debi Shandrick and her husband, Dr. Robert Shandrick, Sugarloaf; niece, Krissie Campbell, and her husband, Joseph and their children, Devin, Dara, Ryder and Slade; cousin, Eugene Evancho, West Hazleton, and several nieces and nephews.

Francis J. Blahoski, 78, passed away suddenly Monday evening at Providence Place Senior Living, Drums, where he resided.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late John and Leona Sawicki Blahoski.

Francis was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the early Vietnam Era with the rank of airman second class. He served his country at both Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico and Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 40 years at the National Institute of Health, Washington, D.C., as an auditor.

Francis was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish, at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Surviving are his beloved brother, Anthony Blahoski, Drums; his beloved nieces, Melissa and Stephanie; and his beloved nephews, Adam and Steven.

She was born in West Hazleton, daughter of the late Charles D. Schlauch and Alverna Mae Fry Schlauch, and resided in West Hazleton for all of her life.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her daughter, Diane Wardingo Ball; sister, Janet Paladino; and brothers, Donald, Russell and Bruce Schlauch.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 56 years, John Edward Wardingo; son, Brian Wardingo and his wife, Melinda, Jacksonville, Fla.; granddaughter, Randi Wardingo and her fiancé, Francisco, West Hazleton; grandson, Sebastian Wardingo; grandsons, Brian and Aaron Wardingo, Jacksonville, Fla.; two great-granddaughters, Arryanna and Brynlee Wardingo; her sisters and brothers, Joyce Reinmiller, Hazleton; Charles Schlauch and his wife, Lorraine, Hazleton; Naomi Fanning, West Hazleton; Dean Schlauch, West Hazleton; and Denise Davidovich and her husband, Larry, Tresckow; and several nieces and nephews.

Lillian Simko, 88, of the Green Ridge section of Hazle Twp. passed away Sunday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

She was born in Crystal Ridge, daughter of the late Michael and Tillie Bunk Skokoski, and resided in Green Ridge, Hazle Twp., for all of her life.

Lillian was a graduate of Hazle Twp. High School, Class of 1952.

She had worked for more than 50 years in the area garment industry as a sewing machine operator and retired from Baron Blouse, Hazleton. Lillian was also a life member of the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union.

Lillian was also a life member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Michael Simko; brothers and sisters, Mary Kozel, Frank and John Skokoski, Annie Macharsky, Sophie Skokoski, Theresa Honis, Veronica Sapala and Betty Skokoski; her nieces, Darlene Macharsky and Linda DeCosmo and her husband, Charles DeCosmo; and her son-in-law, Bernard Tychinski.

Surviving are her beloved daughters, Diane Simko, with whom she resided; and Linda Tychinski, Pardeesville; her beloved grandchildren, Ryan and Courtney Tychinski; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Carter Tychinski; and several nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.

Lillian was the last surviving member of her parents and siblings.

Our beloved mom has died. Thank you, Mom, for being the most wonderful and beautiful and kind mom that you were. We are so glad you were our mom and we were your daughters. We hope we made you proud to be your daughters until we all meet again in heaven. Your loving daughters Diane and Linda will miss you forever. You were the best mother that daughters could ever have.

James V. Aiello, 80, of West Hazleton passed away suddenly Tuesday at his home.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late Vito and Catherine Fallabel Aiello, and lived in the area for all of his life.

James was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve and was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, where he served as an Eucharistic minister in the parish.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Pennsylvania Power and Light Co., Hazleton, as a chem-lab technician.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his son, Jimmy Aiello; his sister, Betsy Clarke; and a brother, Frank Aiello.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 54 years, the former Cecelia Stanziola; his beloved daughter, Jennifer Aiello, Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews.

Karoline Theresa Klar, 104, of Hazle Twp. passed away Friday in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

Born in Germany on Aug. 23, 1918, she was daughter of Friedrich and Theresa Klar.

A strong, selfless woman with an amazing soul, Karoline truly enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as "Nan." She enjoyed her time knitting and crocheting and her family especially enjoyed her cooking and baking as she was very good at it.

On her birthday, Karoline was celebrated in the Standard-Speaker for turning 104 years old.

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by five brothers and two sisters who lived in Germany; grandsons, Robert and his wife, Diane (Yachera) Kapuschinsky, and Ricky Kapuschinsky

Surviving are her daughter, Gerdi Kapuschinsky; grandson, James Kapuschinsky and his wife, Charlote, and their son, Aiden, Windsor, N.Y.; granddaughter, Dr. Megan Thomas and her husband, Dr. J.T. Thomas, and their sons, Julian, Rowan and Callan, Lincoln University.

Martha started off her life after graduation, as a stewardess for two years, employed by Eastern Airlines where she resided in New York City at the time. After raising her family, she worked as a seamstress for Deisroth'sDepartment Store, Hazleton, and a teller at Security Savings, Hazleton. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a secretary at CraigMotors, Hazleton. Martha continued as Hazleton's most revered seamstress right up until the time of her illness.

She loved traveling and spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed her morning mall walks with her good friends Molly and Julie.

Martha married her childhood sweetheart, Frederic G. Sauer, and was married for more than 51 years prior to his death in 2014.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents and her husband Frederic by two sisters; Edna Glance Cantner and Joanna Glance Hinkle.

Surviving are her beloved children: Pamela Himes and her husband Scott, of York, Christopher Sauer and his wife Francine, of West Hazleton, and Arthur Sauer and his partner, Victoria Valerian, of Freeland. Five Grandchildren: Christopher Sauer Jr., Matthew Himes and his wife Alicia, Lauren Barnett and her husband Tyler, Alexander Sauer and his wife Sarah, and Isabella Sauer. Also surviving are four Great-Grandchildren and one on the way.

Carol was employed as a registered nurse in the Hazleton area healthcare industry.

She was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church, Harwood.

Surviving are her beloved husband and caregiver, Ralph F. Yanuzzi, to whom she had been married for the past 43 years; her son, Geoffrey Yanuzzi and his fiancée, Tasha Zebrosky, Freeland; her daughter, Marisa Yannuzzi and her fiancé, Danton Arlotto, Downingtown; two grandchildren, Stevie Lynn and Myla Grace Yannuzzi; and her brother, Ken Sonich and his wife, Linda, Swedesboro, N.J. Lucy Drasher, 89, of Drums passed away Friday at Fritzingertown Senior Living Community, Drums, and ended her earthly journey entering eternal life to be with Jesus Christ, her Savior and Lord.

She was born in West Hazleton, daughter of the late William and Anna Ankudovich and was a graduate of Hazle Twp. High School, Class of 1957, and continued to serve on the Reunion Committee for many years.

Lucy was retired from Cooper Industries (Tung Sol), working at both the Hazleton and Weatherly Plants.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband of 32 years, Leo Drasher; brothers; Anthony and Daniel Ankudovich; and sisters, Aldona Bayzik, Marion Witcofski, Agnes Lindeman and Regina Schreiner. She was the last surviving member of the Ankudovich family.

Lucy was a former member of Ss. Peter and Paul Lithuanian Church, Hazleton, to which she was devoted and was an active member in all church activities. Lucy was currently a member of Good Shepherd Church, Drums.

She loved music, traveling, flowers and animals, especially her Siamese cats.

Lucy is survived by her several beloved nieces and nephews.

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Church, Drums, with the Rev. Peter J. O'Rourke as celebrant.

Interment will follow in Ss. Peter and Paul Lithuanian Cemetery, Hazleton, beside her beloved parents.

Mary Ann Fornataro, 63 of Jupiter, FL, passed away April 16, 2022 after a brief illness. Born in Hazleton, the daughter of the late Carmen and Dolores Brill Fornataro.

She graduated from West Hazleton High Class of 1976. She went on to graduate with a Bachelor and Master's Degree from West Chester University. Also, received a Specialist Degree in Florida and went on to teach for 35 years.

Before her teaching career, Mary Ann worked at both DisneyLand, California and Disney World, Florida.

Mary Ann was an extraordinary person who left a lasting impression on anyone that knew her. She was very creative with many talents. She could turn nothing into something amazing.

Mary Ann was always the "life of the party" and loved spending time with family and friends. She loved going to concerts, especially The Who, Paul McCartney, and The Allman Brothers.

She was an expert flea market shopper, an avid collector, whose home was a museum dedicated to displaying her various collections. Her most passionate collection was her Beatle memorabilia.

She is survived by her beloved son, Marshall Fornataro Minnig, FL. Her brother Carmen, West Hazleton, and her companion of 19 years, Allan Holland, Jupiter, FL. and her life-long friend, Linda Bosak, Syberstville. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and her dear dog, Pepper.

Mary Ann touched so many lives, and she will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

Surviving are her beloved husband, Thomas Vincent Medashefski; and her beloved parents and family back in Thailand.

She loved being outdoors, especially camping and fishing and spending precious time with her husband, Thomas, and also enjoyed preparing and cooking Thai food for herself and her husband.

Theresa M. Krauzlis, 79, of West Hazleton passed away Saturday surrounded by her loving family in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

Born in West Hazleton on Nov. 3, 1942, she was the daughter of the late John and Lucille (Corby) Fucci.

Theresa was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and homemaker. She loved spending time with her family and making memories. Theresa was known for her Italian cookies, she would make them for every occasion and everyone would argue over the last one.

Theresa was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Theresa was preceded in death by her husband, John "Jack" Krazuzlis; her parents, John and Lucille; brother, John Fucci; daughter, Tracey J. Fox; and niece, Renita A. Hudock.

Surviving are her sister, Ann Marie Schmidt and her husband, Frank, Sugarloaf Twp.; a grandson, Michael J. Fox Jr. and his fiancé, Sarah Pogar, Hazle Twp; a granddaughter, Miranda J. Daniel L. Beck, 62, of West Hazleton passed away peacefully at his home Thursday.

Born in Hazleton, he was the son of late Harold Beck and Lois Yost. Graduating from West Hazleton High School, Class of 1978, he then went on to serve a term in the U.S. Air Force. He recently retired from the Hazleton Area School District, where he worked in the maintenance department.

Daniel loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time fishing with his grandchildren, hunting, disc golf and flying drones.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Tammy Sypeck; daughters, Marie Beck LaBuda and husband, Zane, Zion Grove; Jennifer Beck and Melanie Beck, West Hazleton; grandchildren, Zane LaBuda II and Abigail LaBuda; and his cat, Jack. Also surviving are his six brothers and sisters, Dennis Yost, Debbie Beck DiPasquale, Pamela Beck Kairewich, Harold Beck, Wesley Beck and Billie Jo Beck Veet; aunt, Shirley Yost Beck; uncle, Jim Beck and wife, Joanie; along with several nieces and nephews.

Marion Elizabeth Gerber, 84, of Hazleton passed away Jan. 16 due to natural causes.

She was born in West Penn Twp. to George and Elizabeth (Albert) Miller.

During her life, she spent most of her years in Hazleton, where she raised four children with her late husband, Wayne Gerber.

Marion was a passionate woman with a lively personality. She was loving to everyone she met and always took care of her family. She worked in both the food and garment industry. She loved camping with Wayne and their dogs, going to bingo with her friends and enjoyed a number of hobbies, including crocheting and baking.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was grandson, Michael Krebs; sisters, Rosemary Renninger, Beatrice Manganelli and Anna Miller; and brother, Theodore Miller Sr.

Surviving are her wonderful children, Albert Krebs Sr., West Hazleton; Patricia Zschunke and her husband, Charles, Hazleton; Linda Kiker, Knightdale, N.C.; and Dawn Gerber, Hazleton; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild forthcoming; brother, Donald Miller, Tamaqua; and several nieces and nephews.

Dolores (Brill) Fornataro, 91, of West Hazleton, passed away Thursday in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

She was born in Hazleton, the daughter of the late Mrs. Mary Brill and was proud of her Tyrolean heritage.

She was a 1948 graduate of Hazleton High School.

She was married 50 years to Carmen D. Fornataro, who proceeded her in death in 2004.

Dolores was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to many. She is survived by her son, Carmen R. and his girlfriend, LuAnn Fisher, West Hazleton; her daughter, Mary Ann and her companion, Allan Holland, Jupiter, Fla.; her grandson, Marshall Karma Fornataro-Minnig; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as a sisters-in-law.

She was known by all as being an extremely good cook. She impressed all who had the chance to eat her ravioli, meatballs, cookies and other Italian and Tyrolean treats. She participated in a weekly Friday night card club for nearly 50 years with her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Pauline Yamona and Mrs. Jean Pryszbeck; aunt Mary Cundro; life-long friend, Mary Lou Mussoline; and cousin, Jean Hornack.

She loved spending time with her family, going on vacations to Florida, Atlantic City, Wildwood and visiting Knoebel's Grove.

She totally enjoyed when her children's friends or her relatives would come to visit and made sure that they always felt welcome. The home was always busy and full of love and laughter because of Dolores.

She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Patricia L. Shelby, 77, of Sugarloaf Twp., passed away Tuesday morning.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late Andrew and Josephine Ranjo Voycheck, and resided in Sugarloaf Twp. for most of her life.

She was employed as a secretary for many years at the former Gaylords Department Store, Church Hill Mall, and also by NEP Insurance Company, Conyngham.

Patricia was a member of St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church, Conyngham.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her grandson, Dustin.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 56 years, Walter A. Shelby; and sons, Michael Shelby and his wife, Christina, Elkridge, Md.; and David Shelby and his fiancée Beth, Nescopeck; and grandchildren, Marissa, Bennett, Carly and Jace. Also surviving is a sister, Andrea Tobias and her husband, John, Hazle Village. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Michael H. Shewack, 92, of Hazle Twp. passed away unexpectedly Thursday in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton.

He was born in Hazleton, the son of the late Michael and Anna Trotsky Shewack, and resided in Hazle Twp. for most of his life.

Michael was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, with the rank of BT3, stationed aboard the USS Grand Canyon Naval Ship patrolling the Mediterranean Sea, where he served his country proudly from 1951 to 1954.

Prior to his retirement, Michael was employed by Continental White Cap Corporation, Valmont Industrial Park, as a production line worker.

He was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, South Poplar Street, Hazleton, and also a proud member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8161, Conyngham.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his son-in-law, James T. Winters.

Surviving are his loving wife of 69 years, the former Rose Marie Fetter; his beloved children, Eileen Nicolardi and her husband, John, Drums; Daniel Shewack, Old Cranberry; Kathy Falatko and her husband, Joseph, Freeland; Suzanne McGeehan and her husband, Daniel, Drums; Michael R. Michael Stephen Jesky, 80, a lifelong resident of the Hazleton area, passed away Tuesday in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late Michael Francis and Julia Thresia (Krushinski) Jesky.

Michael was a hard worker, working with several manufacturing companies in the Hazleton area. At the age of 22, Michael enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War.

Preceding Michael in death, in additionto his parents, was his wife of 50 years, Karen (Ash) Jesky, whom he loved dearly.

Surviving are his son, Michael T. Jesky and his wife, Jessica, Palmerton; Scott Jesky and his wife, Melissa, Lexington, S.C.; daughter, Diane Ruggiero and her husband, Frank, Drums; stepchildren, Francis Gombeda and his wife, Shirley, San Antonio, Texas; Paula Ziek and her significant other, Grant Delaney; grandchildren, Frank, Trevor and Ryan Ruggiero; Aiden and Connor Jesky; and Gavin Lehman. He is also survived by a sister, Helen Gaughan and her husband, John; and several nephews and a niece.

James "Jimmy" Baran, 63, passed away peacefully Wednesday at St. Luke's Pavilion, Hazleton, after a lengthy illness.

Born Sept. 25, 1958, to the late Carl J. and Barbara M. (Sofianek) Baran, he lived his entire life in the Hazleton area. Jim was a 1976 graduate of Marian Catholic High School. He received his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Syracuse University in 1980 and his M.B.A. from Lehigh University in 1982.

He was employed by Lehigh Service & Supply, Hazleton, before acquiring the business in 1992 and renaming it Lehigh Tire Company. Jim managed the family business for over three decades until his recent retirement.

Jim was a lover of all things automotive, especially British cars. His passion was amateur racing and he was a member of the SCCA. Over the years he owned, prepared and ran several cars in a number of hillclimb events. For 21 years, Jim was a proud sponsor of Weatherly Hillclimb Association events.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his older brother, Gregg, in 2019.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Stephanie, and his beloved granddaughter, Ella, both of White Haven. He is also survived by his brother, Mark, Drums; his brother, Ivan and his wife, Mary, Sykesville, Md.; his sister, Susan Charnigo, Sugarloaf Twp.; his brother-in-law, Mark Charnigo, Drums; four nieces; four nephews; and aunts and uncles.

Jim will be remembered always as a generous friend, loyal brother, loving father and Ella's proud "Pappy."

A celebration of life honoring Jim will be announced at a future date.

Neil Anthony Gabrielle, 96, of Dippel Manor passed away Sunday at Geisinger Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.

He was born in Lattimer, where he spent his childhood years, son of the late Alfonso and Maria Generose Gabrielle.

Neil was a graduate of Hazle Twp. High School, Class of 1943.

He was a veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force with the rank of staff sergeant, where he served his country proudly. Neil was one of 11 crewmembers of the second largest B-24 bomber airplane squadron, which flew 33 missions in the South Pacific Theatre of Operations.

Neil had worked for 30 years as a pattern maker and was the foundry superintendent for the former Barrett, Haentjens & Co., Hazleton.

He was locally known as a master craftsman, designing and making handmade furniture and cabinetry. Neil had designed and built his own home and also his daughters' homes.

His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also, he enjoyed taking camping trips to Cherrystone Campgrounds in Cape Charles, Va., and Disney World, Orlando, Fla., where yearly adventures in his early retirement.

Neil spent the past 30 years as a snowbird, living nine months of the year in his home in Fort Myers, Fla., where he enjoyed fishing with his friends.

He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his brothers, Joseph and Bernard Gabrielle; and his cousin, Dominic Demuzzio, who grew up with his family.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 74 years, the former Elynor Sypeck, whom he married Aug. 9, 1947. His beloved children, David and his wife, Sharon Leeworth Gabriel, Chesapeake, Va.; Daniel and his wife, Mary Kurtz Gabriel, Hazleton; Mark T. and his wife, Kathy Alshefski Gabriel, Hazleton; Maryann Feno and her companion, Harry Mulhall, Hazleton; Wanda Black, Kelayres; and his honored son, Joseph Falensky, West Hazleton, also survive.

Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, Katie and Mark Surkin; Emily and Joe DiSabella; Sara Fetterman and her companion, Michael Hahn; Tammy and Andrew Levy; David C. and Maura Gabriel; Alexander and Connie Alhadad; and Kevin Black; his beloved great-grandchildren, Kevin, Christopher, David, Aiden and Kieran Gabriel; Charlee and Wyatt Fetterman; and Elynor and John DiSabella. Also a special friend of the family, Richard Veranda. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late Michael Bobeck Sr. and Mary M. Bunk Bobeck and lived in West Hazleton for all of his life.

He was a graduate of West Hazleton High School, Class of 1973.

Prior to his retirement, Michael was employed at Gould's IGA-Sure Save Market, Conyngham, as a produce manager.

Michael was a member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, Hazleton.

He was a sports enthusiast, especially watching Penn State sports and the Philadelphia sports teams. He also loved working and attending to his flower and vegetable gardens.

Surviving are his beloved aunts, Florence Nause and her husband, Robert, Sugarloaf Twp.; Patricia Lencalis and her husband, James, Orange, Va.; and Loretta Shoepe, Hazleton. Many cousins and his good friend, Antoinette Sypeck, also survive.

Raymond J. Gogola, 79, of West Hazleton, passed away suddenly Friday morning.

He was born in Hazleton, the son of the late Joseph and Anna Kawala Gogola.

Raymond worked as a lab technician at Silgan in Valmont, which was formerly White Cap. He worked there for 30 years until he retired in 2006.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his two brothers, Richard and Robert; and his brother-in-law, James Fetchko.

He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, where he served as an usher. He was also an active member of the Pulaski Club.

Ray enjoyed traveling, golfing, going to casinos and spending time with his friends, family and especially his grandchildren. He loved life and everyone he met. His infectious smile always lit up the room.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 49 years, the former Sharon McGeehin; his beloved daughters, Michele LaBuda and her husband, Michael, Sugarloaf Twp.; and Judith Callen and her husband, Richard, Perry Hall, Md. Also surviving are the joys of his life, his beloved grandchildren, Madelyn and Marcus LaBuda; and his little buddy, Andrew Callen. Lawrence P. Arendash 82, of West Hazleton passed away Saturday at Providence Place, Drums.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late Andrew and Josephine Wisniewski Arendash.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, with the rank of sergeant, where he served his country proudly.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed for more than 25 years by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board as a Pennsylvaniquia State Lor Store manager in the area.

Lawrence was a member of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish at St. Joseph's Church, Hazleton. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed watching all sporting events and planting and working in his vegetable garden.

John Eckardt, 87, of the Green Ridge section of Hazle Twp., passed away in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Twp., after a short illness.

He was born in Berlin, Germany, and was the son of the late Werner and Edith Trost Eckardt.

He emigrated to the United States in 1953 and began working for General Foam Corp. in New York City. John later relocated to the Hazleton area and retired from General Foam as a plant maintenance manager in 1994.

In his earlier years, John was an avid golfer and bowler.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, the former Louise Pisak; and two beloved daughters, Suzanne, Reno, Nev.; and Annette, Doylestown.

Michelle Kapuschinsky, 67, of Hazleton passed away May 10 in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

Born in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Catherine (Hudak) Elko.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her husband, Lawrence, to whom she was married 48 years before his death in May 2020. Michelle was his caregiver for many years before his death.

She is survived by her daughter, Christine Kapuschinsky; and granddaughter, Brooklyn Dela Cruz, Hazleton. She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters, Ann Orlando; Philip Elko; Karen Yachera and husband, Robert; Michael Elko and wife, Kim; James Elko; Mary Elko; Joan Merenda and husband, Leonard; Mark Elko and wife, Michele; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert J. Parise Sr., 70, of West Hazleton, passed away the afternoon of May 3 in Commonwealth Health Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. He died peacefully surrounded by his loving family and best friend, Lou.

He was born June 3, 1950, to the late Michael and Bernadine Parise.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Daniel; sister-in-law, Frani Parise; and parents.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Parise; children, Robert Parise Jr. and Christine Parise; granddaughters, Amanda and Isondra Parise; brothers, Michael Parise; Alexander and wife, Colleen Parise; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1972. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his granddaughters. He enjoyed having coffee and telling jokes with friends at Laurel Mall, where he admiringly known as Bob, the "mayor of the mall."

Peter Smetana Sr., 80, of Hazleton, passed away Thursday evening at his home.

He was born in the Green Ridge section of West Hazleton, the son of the late Michael and Susan Chitswara Smetana.

Peter served his country in the Army from 1961 to 1963, with the rank of private first class while stationed in Europe.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Hazleton Area School District as a custodian.

He was a member of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hazleton.

He enjoyed country music and was a guitar enthusiast.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was a sister, Mary Woodring; and two brothers, Michael and John Smetana.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 52 years, the former Congetta Gadola; his beloved sons, Peter M. Smetana Jr., at home; and John P. Smetana and his wife, Jennifer, Fleetwood; brother, Stephen Smetana, McAdoo; and a sister, Anna Milot, Fern Glen. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Margaret Kudrick, 93, of Chapel Hill, Hazle Twp., completed her life's journey and passed away peacefully Thursday in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

She was born in Hazleton on May 7, 1927, the daughter of the late Frank and Anastasia Strack.

Margaret was married to the late George Kudrick Sr. for 65 years until his death, March 7, 2011. It was a wonderful marriage.

She had worked at Fabri-Kal as an inspector, packer and trainer for many years until her retirement.

Margaret was a life member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Hazleton, and also was a frequent member of Holy Dormition Monastery, Sybertsville.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents and her beloved husband, George, were several brothers and sisters. She was the last surviving member of her parents and siblings.

Surviving are her beloved children, George Michael Kudrick and his wife, Janet, Sugarloaf Twp.; and Carol Ann Kudrick Margevich, Hazle Twp., with whom she resided; grandsons, Seth Michael and Sean Matthew; great-granddaughter, Emily Rose; and several nieces and nephews.

Carl S. Stabinger, 102, of West Hazleton passed away Wednesday in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

Carl was born in Fondo, Austria, on Oct. 14, 1918, to the late Joseph and Maria Calavinie Stabinger.

In 1919, Carl's family immigrated to the United States. He grew up and resided in West Hazleton for all of his life.

Carl was a veteran of the Army, where he served his country proudly from June 1941 to Oct. 1945, completing his service as a staff sergeant, Company M in the 156th Infantry, seeing combat in the European Theatre of Operations. Carl is believed to be the area's oldestWorld War IIcombat veteran.

Carl worked as a journeyman bricklayer until retiring from Joseph Morelli & Company after 47 years in 1983. After retirement, he volunteered as a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels. He also enjoyed hunting and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Carl was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton. He also was a member of the Hazleton Polonaise Society and the Walter L. Hagelgans Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8253, West Hazleton.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his beloved wife of 63 years, the former Frances Nevadomski Stabinger, to whom he had been married for 63 years, in 2014; a brother, Basil, in 2001; his sister, Matilda, in 2000; and his nephew, David C. Marsiglio, in 2018.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with interment next to his beloved wife in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery, Hazleton.

William Spangenburg

William Spangenburg 82, beloved husband, father and grandfather went to heaven Saturday at St. Luke's Pavillion due to complications from COVID-19.

Born in Hazleton, July 1, 1938, to Maurice and Beatrice Wright Spangenburg. Bill was raised in Conyngham.

Bill graduated from West Hazleton High School in 1956. After graduating, he joined the Army and was stationed in New Mexico. After leaving the service, he worked for the United States Postal Service in New Mexico. He married the love of his life, Virginia, on Aug. 16, 1958. The two made their way back east and settled in Newburgh, N.Y. It was then that Bill entered into a career in law enforcement. He advanced quickly and became the Chief of police in the town of Newburgh. He also trained and graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. In 1979 he was injured in the line of duty and later retired.

After his retirement, he and his family returned to Pennsylvania, where he helped run his wife's engraving business. Bill was very active in the communities where he lived. He was president of the Kiwanis Club. Newburgh, and was involved in the American Legion, Arcil, Red Cross, FOP, Funfest and spent many years in the St. John Bosco choir.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Bob, Ben and Jay; and infant grandson, Matthew.

Bill is survived by his loving and devote wife, Virginia (Magagna); daughters, Tina Reese and Robert; Heidi Genasevich and husband, Mike; Amy Dura and husband, Rich; four grandchildren, his namesake William Reese; Nicole Reese and boyfriend, Tim Klesh; Michael Genasevich Jr.; and Jackson Dura; also, godson and beloved nephew, Bob Spangenburg.

The family would like to thank everyone who helped along the way. We are extremely grateful to Maylath Home Health, Dr. Anthony Veglia, Dr. Catillo and staff and of course, his "personal" nurse, friend and family member, Anne Sullivan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John Bosco Church, Conyngham. All are welcome to attend and there will be no visitation before the service. In following COVID-19 restrictions, social distancing and face masks are required.

Hilary A. Clatch, 98, formerly of West Hazleton, passed away Saturday at Holy Family Senior Living, Bethlehem, where he resided.

Even though he was diagnosed with COVID-19, he fully recovered from the virus and passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes.

He was born in Weatherly, son of the late Michael and Violet Swick Clatch, and lived in West Hazleton for most of his life.

Hilary was a graduate of Hazleton High School.

He was a veteran ofWorld War II, serving his country in the U.S.ArmyMedical Corps with the rank of private first class in the European Theater of Operations.

He had worked for 28 years, employed at Prestolite Wire Division, Hazleton, as an assembler, and retired from the Hazleton Area School District, working nine years in maintenance.

Hilary was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his wife, the former Margaret Lukasevich, on Sept. 22, 2014; brothers and a sister, Charles and James Clatch and Elizabeth Sister Ignatia, Order of the Daughters of Mercy.

Surviving are his beloved children, Hilary Clatch Jr. and his wife, Maria, Mifflinville; and Theresa Mariano and her husband, Albert, Emmaus; his beloved grandchildren, Gina Mariano and her husband, Fred Figliano, Montgomery, Ala.; Jason Mariano and his wife, Christine, Morgantown; Alex Clatch, Berwick; and Lisa Hill and her husband, Anthony, Milford, Del.; great-grandchildren, J.J., Valentina, Rosalie and Michelle Mariano; and Giavanna and Mia Hill. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Laura Shulenski, 95, of Hazleton died Saturday at Mountain City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Hazle Twp., where she was a guest.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late John and Lucille Emert Shulenski, and resided in the area for all of her life.

Prior to her retirement, Laura was employed by Wagner Electric as an assembler.

For most of her life, she attended Mass at Holy Trinity Slovak Church, Hazleton.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her beloved daughter, Mary Alessio, in October 2017. She is now with her daughter, Mary. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Lawrence, Theodore and Anthony Shulenski.

Surviving are her beloved sister, Julie Shulenski, Hazleton; her nephew and caregivers, Larry Shulenski and his wife, Leann, West Hazleton. Also surviving are sister-in-law, Joyce Shulenski, Florda and several nieces and nephews.

A private funeral Mass was held Friday morning in Transfiguation Church, West Hazleton.

Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Drums.

Clara M. Wisniewski, 87, of West Hazleton passed away Dec. 29, 2020 in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

She was born in Cranberry Twp., the daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Gaizick, and resided in the area for all of her life and, until recently, she had lived on Tomhicken Mountain, a place she and her husband Edwin truly enjoyed.

She was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, and, prior to her retirement, she was employed in the area garment industry as a seamstress.

Clara was a wonderful, giving mother and an extremely devoted grandmother to her grandchildren, who were the light of her life.

Preceding her in death were her beloved husband, Edwin M. Wisniewski, on April 5, 2001; and several brothers and sisters

Surviving are her beloved children, Ellen Renchko and her husband, Thomas, Independence, Ky.; Edwin S. Wisniewski, West Hazleton; and William P. Wisniewski, North Miami Beach, Fla.; and her beloved grandchildren, Sara, Ross and Victoria Wisniewski. John E. "Jack" Hartenstein, 79, of Hazle Twp. passed away Thursday afternoon at St. Luke Pavilion, Hazleton.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late Jack and Rose Somits Hartenstein, and resided in the West Hazleton and Sheppton areas for all of his life.

He was a veteran of the U.S.Army, with the rank of Spec 4. He proudly served his country in Germany.

John retired from Structure Reinforcement Products in Humboldt as a grinder and baker. He also was previously employed for 28 years as a crane operator at the former Barrett Haentjens & Co., Hazleton.

He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Surviving are his caregivers and cousins, James F. Brandau and his wife, Sheila, Yardley; Timothy J. Brandau and his wife, Roseanne, Wilmington, Del.; and Marilou Bittorf, Hazleton.

Francis "Frank" J. Bajor, 83, of Conyngham, passed away Monday at St. Luke Manor, Hazleton.

He was born in Trenton, Schuylkill County, son of the late Joseph and Anna Sekula Bajor.

He was a veteran of the U.S.Army, with the rank of SP5 E-5, where he served his country proudly.

Prior to his retirement, he was co-owner and operator of the McAdoo Machine Shop, McAdoo, as a skilled machinist.

Frank was a member of St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church, Conyngham.

Frank was a family man. He loved giving all his time to his family, especially his granddaughters who he cherished.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were several brothers and sisters. He was the last surviving member of his parents and siblings.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 50 years, the former Patricia Valerian; his sons, Anthony Bajor and his wife, Michelle, Moscow; and Jeff Bajor and his wife, Laura, Whitehall; his four cherished granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. John Bosco Church.

WEST PITTSTON — Martin M. Sivar, age 76, formerly of West Hazleton, and who resided in West Pittston, passed away Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late Martin T. and Helen Ryba Sivar, and lived in West Pittston since 1975.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Blaser Quik-Lube in Goshen, N.Y., as a sales manager.

Martin was a veteran of the Army with the rank of SP 5 where he proudly served his country during the Vietnam era.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 45 years, the former Gail Dymond; children, Kimberly Priestash and her husband John, of Plano, Texas; Ernest Barber and his wife Christina, of Exton; Michelle Strassman and her husband Eric, of Downingtown; four grandchildren, Madison, Collin, Max and Jacob; and sister, Carol Walko, of Hazle Township. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Anna P. Grobelny, 104, of West Hazleton passed away Wednesday at St. Luke Manor, Hazleton, where she was a guest.

She was born in Crystal Ridge, daughter of the late Michael and Julia Koziel Pazdon, and lived in West Hazleton for all of her life.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed at Reidler Knitting Mill as a machine operator.

Anna was a life member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton. She was involved in the St. Theresa's Society of the church and was active at all parish picnics.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her husband, Frank Grobelny, in 1982; a brother, Joseph Pazdon; and sisters, Mary Mehalick, Theresa Drowniak and Gertrude Zipovsky.

Surviving are her beloved sons, Henry Grobelny and his wife, Lorraine, Perth Amboy, N.J., Victor Grobelny, St. Louis, Mo.; Eugene Grobelny, West Hazleton; and John "Josh" Grobelny and his wife, Donna, Sugarloaf Twp.; sister, Cecelia Chupela, Edison, N.J.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Renita was employed by the Hazleton Area School District as a paraprofessional for 19 years. She was a member of Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, in Hazleton. She loved spending time with her two cats, Pumpkin and Lucky, enjoyed playing cards with her family, socializing with her friends from work and spending time with her family.

Surviving are her lifelong companion, John DiSabella, Hazleton; a daughter, Terria L. Hudock, Camp Hill; a son, Tyler J. Hudock, at home; mother, Ann Marie Schmidt (Fucci), and stepfather, Frank Schmidt,Sugarloaf Twp.; father, Ronald Pacelli; a brother, David John Boock; an aunt, Theresa Krauzlis, all of Hazle Twp. Eleanor M. Walters, 85, of Packer Twp., Weatherly, passed away Friday at Pavilion at St. Luke Village, Hazleton, where she was a guest.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late George F. and Theresa Lincoln Marankie and resided in Packer Twp. for most of her life.

Eleanor was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Weatherly, where she was active in many of the church activities. She was loved by everyone and will be sadly missed.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her beloved husband, Jack Walters, in 2016, two sons, Jack and John; and her brother, George Marankie.

She was born in McAdoo and was the daughter of the late Andrew and Anna (Natishin) Butala.

Elaine graduated from McAdoo High School in 1954. She worked at Tung-Sol and was a crossing guard for Hazleton Area School District for 19 years.

She was a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Catholic Church, West Hazleton. She loved and practiced her faith, including saying the rosary every day. She looked forward to making Holy Supper at Christmas time and getting a basket blessed at Easter. She was also a member of the Hazleton Owls Rod & Gun Club.

Elaine enjoyed traveling, going on cruises and trips to the beach. She also went to many concerts and was a big Penn State, New York Giants, Raiders and NASCAR fan.

She was a loving, caring and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who provided love, support and wisdom to her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Francis; her brother, Robert Butala and his wife, Bonnie; and her sister-in-law, Barbara Butala. She is also survived by her three children, Thomas, Bethlehem; Michele, Dunkirk, Md.; and Frank and his wife, Beth, Fairfax, Va.; three grandchildren, Emma, Shawn and Scott; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Andrew and Joseph; and sister, Anna (Butala) Novatnack.

Leona C. Oakes, 99, of West Hazleton passed away April 28 at her home.

She was born in West Hazleton, daughter of the late George and Kathryn Ancharski Oakes, and resided in West Hazleton for all of her life.

Leona was a graduate of West Hazleton High School and Bloomsburg Teachers University. She taught for all of her life at the former E.A. Encke School.

She was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were two brothers, John and George Oakes; and a sister; Florence Gibson.

Surviving are her beloved caregiver and niece, JoAnn Chura and her husband, Richard, Drums.

Gloria Jean (Lockwood) Liene, 56, of West Hazleton died Saturday at Mountain Top Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center after a long, courageous battle with multiple sclerosis.

Born in Hazleton on April 13, 1963, Gloria was the daughter of Joseph and Florence Lockwood. The second-youngest of six children, Gloria grew up in a close family in the tight-knit village of Tresckow.

A 1981 graduate of West Hazleton High School and the Hazleton Area Vocational-Technical School cosmetology program, Gloria was the WHHS Wildcats’ 1981 senior class president.

She earned a degree from the former Lackawanna Junior College and worked for many years as a medical transcriptionist.

Gloria also was a former president of the Hazleton Area Multiple Sclerosis Support Group.

Petite and not-quite-five-feet-tall, Gloria was iron-willed and resolute and endured the disease with strength and courage. Her family was her world and she cherished them and her friends with all of her heart.

Gloria is survived by her husband of 31 years, Anthony F. Liene Jr.; a daughter, Tristi Lenz and her husband, Eric Lenz; and a granddaughter, Amelia Lenz, all of Dunmore; and a son, Anthony F. Liene III, West Hazleton.

Gloria was predeceased by her parents, Joseph, in 1977; and Florence in 2018.

Gloria also is survived by three sisters, Marian Lockwood, Tresckow; Joan Smith, Slatington; and Cheryl Mazaika and partner, Al Irvin, South Carolina; two brothers, Joseph Lockwood and wife, Lori, Conyngham; and James Lockwood and wife, Lauren, Milford; her father- and mother-in-law, Anthony and Rita Liene, Hazle Twp.; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Lieb and husband, Paul Lieb, Hazleton; sister-in-law, Sandy Theodore, Palmyra; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Theresa Drowniak, 100, formerly of West Hazleton and who resided in Sugarloaf Twp., and had been temporarily residing in Fritzingertown Senior Living Community, Drums, passed away Wednesday in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

She was born in Crystal Ridge, daughter of the late Michael and Julia Koziol Pazdon.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed in the area garment industry as a seamstress and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

Theresa was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, the St. Theresa’s Society at the parish and was active in the parish, giving her time making pierogies for the church picnic.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Nicholas Drowniak, in 1993; a sister, Mary Mehalick; and a brother, Joseph Pazdon.

Surviving are her beloved children, Nicholas R. Drowniak, Sugarloaf Twp.; Patricia Kachurak and her husband, Joseph, Trinity, Fla.; her beloved grandchildren, Christine, Robert, Brian and Mark; her beloved great-grandchildren; her beloved sisters, Cecelia Chupela, Edison, N.J.; Anna Grobelny, West Hazleton; and Gertrude Zipovsky, Pennsylvania; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary S. Pleban, 83, of Hazleton, passed away Thursday at Mountain Top Health Care Center.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late Michael and Helen (Shroba) Nemchick Nemshick, and resided in the area all of her life.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by several area law firms as a legal secretary.

Mary was a member of Good Shepherd Church, Drums.

Preceding her in death, in addtion to her parents, were her husband, Leon J. Pleban, in 2004, and her son, Rick Pleban.

Surviving are her beloved son, Thomas Tom Pleban and his wife, Mary Jo, Conyngham; a grandson, Matt, Mooresville, N.C.; a sister, Helen Nemchick, Hazle Twp., and a brother, Michael Nemshick, and his wife, Patricia, Hazle Brook. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Bernadine I. Buyarski, 81, of Hazle Twp. passed away Saturday at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

She was born in Hazleton, the daughter of the late Michael and Verna Palo Kapuschinsky, and resided in the area all of her life.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Burcilla Corp. in both Valmont and Humboldt industrial parks as a packer in the needlecraft industry.

Bernadine was a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, where she was very active in all of the church activities.

She enjoyed spending her time with her children and grandchildren, planting flowers year after year around her house and loved sitting on her porch, greeting and talking to her neighbors and anyone who passed by.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were three brothers, Daniel, John Gerald and Robert Kapuschinsky.

Surviving are her beloved husband, Robert “Bob” Buyarski, to whom she had been married for the past 60 years; her beloved sons, Robert Buyarski Jr. and his wife, Rachalle, Pardeesville; David Buyarski and his wife, Wendy, Dallas; Edward Buyarski and his companion, Janine, Hazleton; James Buyarski, Hazle Twp.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Lawrence Kapuschinsky and his wife, Michelle, Hazleton. Dorothy Halcisak Holling, 86, of West Hazleton, was welcomed into the arms of her Lord Saturday at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest.

She was born Jan. 28, 1934, in Hazleton, to the late Joseph and Constance Halcisak.

Dorothy spent much of her life in the same house in West Hazleton where she was raised and where she raised her own children, cared for her parents until their passing and then spent the rest of her life with her son, Dennis. She was a lifelong member of Transfiguration Parish (Holy Name of Jesus) where she passed on her Catholic faith to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When not at home or at church, Dorothy and Dennis would be found camping and enjoying God’s beauty.

She attended Hazle Twp. schools and graduated in 1951. She went on to serve in the U.S. Navy Quartermaster Corps. during the Korean Conflict at the Philadelphia Naval Base. She then worked most of her adult life at Bemis, previously St. Regis, until her retirement.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lucile Matweecha, McAdoo; and brothers-in-law, Peter Matweecha, McAdoo; and James Marion, New York.

She is survived by her siblings, Stanley and Joanne Halcisak, New Port Richie, Fla.; Patricia Marion, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and Joseph and Rose Halcisak, West Hazleton. She is also survived by her beloved children, Stanley Sr. and his wife, Marie Holling, Titus, Ala.; Donald and his wife, Judy Holling, Sugarloaf Twp.; Dennis Holling, Green Ridge section of West Hazleton; and Lysia Scheib, Hazleton; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Countless cousins, nieces and nephews also join in her loving remembrance.

Lawrence M. “Speedy” Sypeck, 81, of Hazle Twp., passed away Friday in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late Louis C. and Sophia Wojcik Sypeck, and lived in the Green Ridge section of Hazle Twp. for all of his life.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed for over 35 years as a truck driver by General Foam Corp. in Valmont Industrial Park, West Hazleton. Larry was a former member of Tomhicken Mountaineers Club and currently was a member of the Flying Aces Motorcycle Club, Rockport. He was a avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, and also loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycles and listening to Polka music.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his brother, Louis C. Sypeck Jr.

Surviving are his beloved brother, Bernard Sypeck, of Hazle Twp.; his companion dog, Clarence; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

James W. Gallagher, 68, Quakake, formerly of Beaver Brook, passed away Thursday.

His funeral will be held today at St. Richard Roman Catholic Church, Barnesville. The family will receive friends in the church today from 10 to 11 a.m.

He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, and was an avid lover of his two German shepherds, Gia and Gabby, which he loved walking with around the borough.

Jamo was a very open person to all people. He loved to stop and talk to everyone while walking his dogs.

He was a very friendly and funny man, and was loved by everyone who he met.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were three brothers, Robert, Richard and John Geisick.

Surviving are two brothers, David and Michael Geisick, and his sister, Marybeth Geisick, all of West Hazleton. Also surviving are many close friends.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were a granddaughter, Julia Maolucci; two brothers, Walter Smolen Jr. and John Smolen; and her son-in-law, Anthony Bottley.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 65 years, Joseph Lorince; her beloved children, Monica Maolucci and her husband, Vincent, New Jersey; Barbara Bottley, Hazleton; Joanne Ciampi and her husband, Frank, Hazle Twp.; Jacqueline Lorince and her companion, Bill Bone, Springs; her beloved grandchildren, Michael Maolucci; Frank Ciampi Jr. and his wife, Jessica; Nina Bottley and fiancé, Josh Atsinger. Arlene M. Pressler, 66, of West Hazleton passed away Saturday at her home.

Born in Hazleton on Nov. 6, 1952, she was the daughter of the late Walter J. and Helen S. O’Halla Skonieczny, and lived in West Hazleton for all of her life.

Prior to her retirement from Hazleton General Hospital, now Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton, in 2018, she was employed as a licensed practical nurse at both St. Luke’s Pavilion and St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hazleton, and Nurse Staff Builders. She spent 29 years as a dedicated health care professional.

Arlene was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, where she married her husband of 41 years, the late Timothy W. Pressler, on April 6, 1973.

Arlene was a lover of animals, especially her two dogs, Gizmo and Max. Her greatest joys in life were her three grandchildren, who were her whole world, Olivia, Jonathan and Joshua. She enjoyed listening to the bands Journey and Bon Jovi in her car and just driving to go do something with her grandchildren. The simple pleasures in life made her smile. She will be deeply missed.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents and her husband, were her brother, Walter J. Skonieczny Jr., and her niece, Amanda Skonieczny.

Surviving are her beloved children, Lisa Pressler and her fiancé, Edward Bykowski, West Hazleton; Gary Pressler and his fiancé, Joan McNulty, Beech Mountain, Drums; Tara Jadush and her husband, Alan, Freeland; and Merilee Pressler, Beaver Meadows; her beloved grandchildren, Olivia, Jonathan and Joshua; her brother, Daniel Skonieczny and his wife, Kelly, Brooksville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Paula Sarosky, 83, of Hazleton passed away Thursday surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late Adam and Pauline Agnes Pedro Subsinsky, and resided in Hazleton for all of her life.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed at Baron Blouse and Geisler Knitting Mill, Hazleton, in the area garment industry as a sewing machine operator.

Paula was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hazleton, and enjoyed spending time with her beloved grandchildren, who called her “EE.”

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was a brother, Adam “Corky” Subsinsky.

Surviving are her beloved sons, Michael Sarosky and his wife, Sandra “Sandy,” Hazleton; and Jason Sarosky and his fiancée, Stephanie, Conyngham; her beloved grandchildren, Nicole and Michael Sarosky; a great-granddaughter, Ava; and a brother, William “Billy” Subsinsky, Hazleton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Bethlehem Steel Corp. as a crane operator.

He was a member of Most Precious Blood Church, Hazleton; the Flying Aces Motorcycle Club, Rockport, where he was a life member; and the Hogs Motorcycle Club and Association, Orwigsburg.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was a brother, Joseph.

Surviving are his sister, Theresa Gordon Isabella, Hernando, Fla.; two nieces, Susan Stein and her husband, Alan, Kennett Square; and Elizabeth Gordon, San Clemente, Calif.; nephew, Frank Luongo; and fiancée and caregiver, Dot Marchetti Potkey, Drums.

John J. Zellner, 62, of Hazleton, passed away Monday evening at his home.

He was born in Hazleton, the son of the late John G. Zellner, who died on Dec. 14, 2002, and Dolores D. Degutis Zellner, who died July 15, 2018.

John had previously worked with the Unted Rehabilitation Service in Hazleton and at the Avenue of Hazleton as an assembler.

He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his sister, Anita.

Surviving are his twin sister, Denise K. Zellner Hazleton; sister, Debi Shandrick and her husband, Dr. Robert Shandrick, Sugarloaf Twp.; niece, Krisse Campell, her husband, Joseph, and their children, Devin, Dara, Ryder and Slade; cousin and caregiver, Eugene Evancho of West Hazleton; and several nieces and nephews.

Eugene was the son of the late Clara and Louis Rossi of Weatherly.

He was a military veteran of 26 years. In October 1966, he married Jean Marie (Scarp) Rossi.

Eugene enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and the Butler Twp. Senior Center, where he held the position of treasurer.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his brother, Leonard Rossi; and granddaughter, Brittany Agresta.

He is survived, in addition to his wife, Jean Marie, by his children, Eugene, Sheila, Elizabeth, John and wife, Brenda, and Tiffany; grandchildren, Ryan and Justin Rossi, Brianna Agresta and companion Nicholas Kokinda, Josh Agresta, Brian Miller and companion, Skilee Gould, Kaitlin and Haley Karnish, Devon and John Rossi; great-grandchildren, Gwen and Cove Rossi, and Bailee Miller; sister, Loretta Van Orden; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Helen Przybeck, 91, formerly of West Hazleton, passed away Saturday in Mountain City Nuring Center, Hazle Twp., where she resided.

She was born in St. Clair, the daughter of the late John and Anna Melochick Homa.

She was employed for many years in the St. Clair area garment industry as a seamstress.

Helen was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Edward Przybeck Sr., and her son, Edward Przybeck Jr. Also preceding her in death were several brothers and sisters.

Surviving are her beloved sister and brother, Dorothy Sakmary, Burlington, N.J., and Paul Homa, Garden Grove, Calif. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Her funeral was held Wednesday with the Rite of Committal prayers in Transfiguration Cemetery, West Hazleton, at the grave with Monsignor Arthur J. Kaschenbach offering the final prayers.

Joan M. Radziewicz, 83, of West Hazleton, passed away Wednesday at her home.

She was born in Scranton, the daughter of the late Michael and Anna Lengen Havrilla.

Joan was a member of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish at St. Joseph Church, Hazleton.

She was an avid Philadelphia Eagles and New York Yankees fan.

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband, George Radziewicz, on Oct. 11, 1992.

Surviving are her beloved children, Dr. Mark Radziewicz and his wife, Toni, of Mountain Top; Michael Radziewicz, of West Hazleton; Matthew Radziewicz, of West Hazleton; and Ann Yanochko and her husband, David, of West Hazleton; four grandchildren; and a nephew, Michael Lengen.

He was born in Mountain Grove, the son of the late Joel and Emma Boyle Wittig. Prior to retirement, he was employed at Shultz Tire Retreading in Delano for 44 years as head foreman.

Dale was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, where he was very active in the church and also a life member of the 3rd degree of West Hazleton Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 59 years, the former Cecelia Skitski; his beloved children, Daniel Wittig and his wife, Gloria, of Newtown Square; and Joan Wittig, of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Carol Robbins, of Bloomsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen M. (Dobrydnio) Varenda, 94, was taken to Heaven on June 28.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Frank M. Varenda and son-in-law, Allan R. Hoegg; and siblings, Mary Petrosky, Stanley, Gertrude Cepil, Edward and Joseph. She was the last of her siblings.

She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Hoegg and Marguerite (John) Ackerman; grandchildren, Matthew (Sarah) and Rachel Ackerman (fiancé Aaron Bowe); and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

She was born Jan. 9, 1925, in Hazleton, to the late John P. and Mary Elisabeth (Cwiklinski Dobrydnio.

A graduate of Hazleton High School, Class of 1942, Helen was a devoted mother and grandmother. She worked in the local garment industry and was a member of the Polonaise Society and Holy Rosary/Transfiguration Church. In addition to her love of God and country, she was well known for her generosity and loving and supporting ways. She will be so missed.

Besides being with family and friends, she enjoyed sitting on her swing, feeding the birds, watching her flowers grow in her beautiful garden and dogsitting her “great-granddog,” Tanner.

Kay Allen, Age 84, of Hazleton, passed away Friday, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton. She was born in Hazleton, daugher of the late Peter and Anna Andrews Gontz. Prior to her retirement, Kay was employed in the area garment industry as a presser.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her beloved husband, Charles H. Allen, on April 9, 1988, and a brother, George Gontz.

Surviving are beloved children, Kris Giedosh and her husband Michael, of Lattimer; Ralph Gontz, of Hazleton; Gail Lashock and her husband, Stanley, of Hazle Twp.; Michael Gontz, of Hazleton; and Charles Allen, of Elizabethtown, Ky.; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, James Gontz, of Mahanoy City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born in Brava Cabo Verde, the daughter of the late John and Camille DaLomba, and resided in West Hazleton since 1990.

Rosa was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her beloved husband, Armando A. Almeida Sr., on Oct. 19, 2017; three sons, Cazimiro, James and John Baptista; daughter, Camille; two brothers, Jose and Joaquin DaLomba; and a sister, Bertha Canto.

Surviving are her beloved children, Olavo Almeida, of West Hazleton; Armando Almeida Jr. and his wife, Aracelis, of Humble, Texas; Margarita Morales and her husband, Luis, of West Hazleton; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara Corria, of Hazleton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Aaron G. Reimiller, 73, of West Hazleton, passed away Friday at Mountain Top Senior Care, Wright Twp., where he was a brief guest.

He was born in Hazleton, the son of the late Howard and Rebecca (Warg) Reimiller Sr.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Hazle Park Meat Packing for 15 years and Greenview Meats in Hazle Twp., as a meat cutter, and also Chromatex, American Value Vending and T & L Pierogies.

Aaron was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War with the rank of specialist 4th class, where he served his country honorably.

He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his beloved son, Mark Reimiller and two sisters, Sandra Stanziola and Dorothy Columbo.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 32 years, the former Cecilia “Ceil” Hama; three brothers, Robert Reimiller and his wife Joan, of Berwick; Howard Reimiller Jr., of Hazleton; and William Reimiller and his wife, Linda, of Beach Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.

Elaine M. Wagner, 81, of Quincy Street, West Hazleton, died at her home Tuesday.

Born in Hazleton on March 21, 1938, she was a daughter of the late John and Julia (Shuletsky) Wagner and resided in the area her entire life.

Elaine was a 1955 graduate of Hazleton High School, a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish, West Hazleton, and the Hazleton Area Center for Slavic Studies.

For several years, she was a member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union and was employed as a sewing machine operator, retiring from O&S Garment Factory of Hazleton.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her sister, Theresa J. Wagner, and several cousins.

Surviving are cousins, Robert and Maryann Wagner, James and Marlene Wagner, Judy Wagner, Andrew and Rosemary Shuletsky, Francis Shuletsky, Judith Szulecki, Mark Szulecki and Matt and Claudia Sheriff.

Orlando E. Williams, 67, of North Broad Street, West Hazleton, died Friday afternoon.

Gary L. High, 71, of Conyngham passed away Wednesday evening.

He was born in Quakertown, the son of the late Walter and Grace (Myers) High, and resided in Conyngham.

Gary was employed by PP&L Electric Utilities Corporation for 49 years as an electrical engineer.

He was a lifetime member of Penn State Alumni Association, Penn State Nittany Lion Club, he enjoyed camping, fishing and boating as well as attending Penn State football games and spending time with his grandchildren. Gary loved traveling with his family & friends.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his sister, Linda Reed.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 45 years, the former Janet Smith; his beloved sons, Christopher High and his wife, Bobbi-Jo, of Sinking Spring; Michael High and his wife, Amanda, of Shillington; his beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Kara, Carter and Callie; a brother, Dean High and his wife, Lois, of Langhorne; and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday from Hilary J. Bonin Funeral Home, 99 W. Green St., West Hazleton.

Internment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, West Hazleton.

Veronica Lea Rendako Charles, 52, died Sunday evening in Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Lawton, Okla., she was the daughter of the late Lorraine (Carroll) Rendako and Anthony Raymond Rendako, Hazleton.

She is survived by her sons, Jack “JJ” Charles, Little Rock, Ark.; and Brandon McGinnis, Hazleton; daughter, Hannah McGinnis, Nantico*ke; sisters, Lenora (Gary) Hampton; and Antonette (Dave Nachreiner) Shelby, Austin, Texas; brother, Anthony Raymond (Laura) Rendako, Kennesaw, Ga.; two grandsons, Jack Charles and Gabriel McGinnis; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service, led by Pastor Brad Travelpiece, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Lives Changed By Christ Church, 760 Airport Road, Hazle Twp.

Gary Zubris, 48, of Hometown passed away Saturday in Hershey Medical Center from complications following surgery.

Gary was the son of Robert and Mary (Malitsky) Zubris. He is also survived by his brother, Matthew; and his daughter, Merranda Zehner, all of Hometown. In addition, he is survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A graduate of Penn College of Technology, Gary was employed by BPM, Philadelphia, and other industrial firms in the West Chester and Wilkes-Barre areas through the years.

Gary was loved by many people. He shared his unique gifts with others, especially his musical talent and his ability to make others laugh. He and his gifts will long be remembered.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

John J. “Jack” Nawracay Jr., 83, of West Hazleton passed away Sunday morning after a brief illness.

He was born in West Hazleton, son of the late John and Mary (Dudeck) Nawracay and lived in West Hazleton for his entire life.

John was a veteran of the U.S. Navy with the rank of IC2 aboard the USS Norris.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 32 years by Bell-Atlantic as a switchman.

He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 58 years, the former Marilyn Guscott; his beloved children, Linda Wackley and her husband, Chris, Drums; Lisa Ragan and her husband, Daniel, Drums; and David Nawracay, Conyngham; his beloved grandchildren, Larissa Condic, Lauren Wackley and Eric Ragan; sister, Eleanor Walko, McAdoo; and several nieces and nephews.

Marie M. Skokoski, 88, of Green Ridge, Hazle Twp, departed this life Friday.

She was born and raised in McAdoo, the daughter of the late John and Julia (Souchak) Butala.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, on Oct. 21, 2013; her beloved daughter, Linda Marie Skokoski DeCosmo, and her son-in-law, Charles DeCosmo Sr., who passed away together on Oct. 2, 2017; and a brotAher, John Butala Jr.

Surviving are her beloved sons, Attorney Frank J. Skokoski, John Skokoski and his fiancée, Fredalyn, Joseph L. Skokoski and Michael J. Skokoski and his wife, Virginia; nine grandchildren; brother, Eugene Butala and his wife, Joanie, Tamaqua; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Prior to retirement, Marie worked at Wright’s Knitting Mill as a material handler.

Marie was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, and everyone who knew her knew she was a devoted Catholic. Marie was a member of all parish organizations and for many years helped cook for the parish picnic. As she got older, she enjoyed selling tickets for the parish picnic, and her “gift of gab” sold many tickets for the church. In addition, Marie enjoyed making rosaries in her spare time and donated them to various religious organizations around the world and to anyone who wanted one whom she met. Her devotion to the Blessed Mother and her religion took her to Fatima, Lourdes, Rome and Medjugorie.

She loved her family and was a devoted mother and grandmother. Arthritis slowed her down recently but, in her younger days, she loved to cook and bake. She always kept a flower garden and cared for it even when she needed the help of her walker. Although she was suffering from arthritis and other ailments, her spirit always remained strong. She was taken home unexpectedly, surrounded by her loving family. She will be missed very much. We love you Mom and Granny.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from Hilary J. Bonin Funeral Home, 99 W. Green St., West Hazleton.

Dolores D. “DeDe” Zellner, 86, of Hazleton, formerly of West Hazleton, passed away Sunday afternoon at her home.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late John and Anna Degutis, and resided in the area for all of her life.

She had been employed for many years in the area garment industry as a seamstress, and then retired from the United Charities Home in West Hazleton as a cook.

“DeDe” was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

She was known as a most generous woman and spent her life caring for her children, who were her world.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her beloved husband, John C. Zellner, on Dec. 14, 2002, and her beloved daughter, Anita.

Surviving are her beloved children, twins, John and Denise Zellner, Hazleton; and her daughter, Debi Shandrick and her husband, Dr. Robert Shandrick, Sugarloaf Twp.; her beloved granddaughter, Krissie Campbell and her husband, Joseph, Berwick; and her beloved great-grandchildren, Devin, Dara, Ryder and Slade. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Alan D. Sieverski, 63, of Hazle Twp. passed away suddenly Friday in Good Shepherd Specialty Hospital, Bethlehem.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late Daniel and Mary Jane (Mattie) Sieverski, and resided in Hazle Twp. for most of his life.

Alan was a graduate of West Hazleton High School, Class of 1974.

Prior to his disability, he was employed by Kama Corp. in the maintenance/sanitation department.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 39 years, the former Mary Beth Dougherty; a sister, Jane Burke, Drums; and two brothers, James Sieverski and his wife, Debbie, Sugarloaf Twp.; and Gary Sieverski and his wife, Debbie, West Hazleton. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Keeping with the family’s wishes, a private funeral service and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Joseph A. Schott Sr., 71, of Dunmore passed away Wednesday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late Peter and Mary Ellen (Titus) Schott, and resided in Drums and Jeddo for most of his life.

“Schotty,” as his friends called him, was a veteran of the 173rd Airborne Brigade in the U.S. Army, serving his country during the Vietnam War.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Hershey Co.

Joe had a passion for baseball and softball, as he played and coached in many adult leagues throughout his life. He later coached his children in Little League and Babe Ruth. He was also a member of Valley Vets Post 8161, Conyngham.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his brother, Christopher Schott, in 2003.

Surviving are his beloved children, Joseph Schott Jr. and his wife, Kaitlin, East Fallowfield Twp.; Jeremy Schott and his wife, Ashley, and children, Ava and Jeremy Jr., Drums; and Kassandra Schott and her significant other, Michael Mizenko, Jeddo; the mother of his children, Marcella Schott, Jeddo; stepchildren, including Kim (Bending) Bauer and children, Tabitha and Heidi; and Heather Bending and child, Ani; brothers, Ronald Schott and his wife, Gloria, Lexington, S.C.; and Douglas Schott, who was instrumental in providing excellent care to his brother where they resided in Dunmore. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Mary Mehalick, 99, formerly of Crystal Ridge, passed away Friday morning at Mountain City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Hazle Twp., where she was a guest.

She was born in Crystal Ridge, daughter of the late Michael and Julia (Koziol) Pazdon, and resided in the area for all of her life.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Reidler Knitting Mill as a sewing machine operator, and was a member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her beloved husband, Stanley Mehalick, in 1979, and a brother, Joseph Pazdon, in 1996.

Surviving are her beloved sisters, Anna Grobelny, West Hazleton; Theresa Drowniak, Sugarloaf Twp.; Cecelia Chupela, Edison, N.J.; and Gertrude Ziposky, Harleigh. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Joseph B. Steber, 71, of Beaver Meadows passed away Thursday at St. Luke Pavilion, Hazleton, where he was a brief guest.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late Joseph G. and Sophia (LaSota) Steber, and lived in Beaver Meadows for most of his life.

Joseph was a veteran of the U.S. Army, with the rank of E-4 during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed at Fort Ord, Calif.

Prior to his retirement, he was a lifelong electrician serving the commercial industry, and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Surviving are his beloved wife, the former Martha Mehalik, to whom he had been married for the past 47 years; his beloved children, Colette, Freeland; and Joseph Steber and his wife, Jackie, Drums; and his beloved grandchildren, Wesley, Russell, Zachery and Sophia. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

His funeral will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. with Office of Christian Burial from Hilary J. Bonin Funeral Home, 99 W. Green St., West Hazleton, with the Rev. James Demko as celebrant.

He was born in West Hazleton, son of the late George and Sophia (Kawalec) Zieminski. He was a graduate of Transfiguration School, Class of 1939, and West Hazleton High School, Class of 1943.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Corning Glass Works, Corning, N.Y., where he was a 65-year Corning member and never missed a day in 38 years.

George was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, and he also loved to hunt and fish and gardening.

Surviving are his beloved sister, Irene Duggan and her husband, Dr. Paul Duggan, Vienna, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

John Vercusky, 88, of West Hazleton passed away suddenly Thursday at his home.

He was born in Hazleton, son of the late John Sr. and Mary (Skimbo) Vercusky, and resided in West Hazleton for all of his life.

Prior to his retirement, he was a butcher and owner and operator of John’s Market in West Hazleton.

John was a veteran of the Korean War with the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received serving his country.

He was a member of St. John Byzantine Catholic Church, Hazleton, and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren, watching them participate in sports.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his beloved wife, the former Mary Elaine Timcho, in July 2006, and a grandson, Brandon Vercusky,

Margaret Gundy, 88, formerly of Beaver Meadows, passed away Saturday evening at Providence Place Retirement Community, Drums, where she resided.

She was born in Beaver Meadows, daughter of the late Alex and Mary (Marchisin) Prokopick, and lived in Beaver Meadows for all of her life.

Prior to retiring, Margaret was employed by Wagner Electric in Weatherly as an assembler and monitor.

She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Beaver Meadows, and was active in pierogi making in her parish. She was also a member of the Penn State Club of Carbon County.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her beloved husband, James Gundy, in July 2010; sisters, Mary P. Tarapchak and Anna Szlachtianshyn; and a brother, Michael Prokopick.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late Ignatius and Mary (Platek) Skorupski, and resided in West Hazleton for most of her life.

She was a graduate of West Hazleton High School and Benjamin Franklin University in Philadelphia, where she graduated as a lab technician.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Pennsylvania Monument Co. in Humboldt Industrial Park as a secretary.

Patricia was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Joseph M. Stola, in 1999; sisters, Stella Diksa, Miriam Minutola, Julia Bartko, Helen Waniel, Eleanor Casazza, Josephine Horn and Shirley Wise; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ralph and Carmella Stola; and brother-in-law, Anthony Stola.

Surviving are her beloved son, Joseph R. Stola, West Hazleton, and his fiancée, Suzanne Wisdo, Freeland; brother, Gregory J. Andrew Lopo Jr., 90, of Hazleton passed away Wednesday evening at Mountain City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Hazle Twp., where he was a guest.

He was born in Hollywood, son of the late Andrew Sr. and Helen (Yurko) Lopo, and resided in Hazleton for all of his life.

He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Navy, with the rank of seaman first class, stationed at USNTC Sampson, N.Y., and aboard the USS Macon, where he received the American Theater Ribbon and Victory Medal, upon his separation and honorable discharge from his service to his country.

Prior to his retirement, Andrew was employed for more than 33 years by the Tobyhanna Army Depot as a clerk.

He was a member of St. John Byzantine Catholic Church, Hazleton, the Hazleton Owls Rod and Gun Club and the Hazleton Slovak Club.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his beloved wife, the former Rose Marie Kravitz, on April 19, 2010, and his daughter-in-law, Bonnie Lopo, in 2013.

Surviving are his beloved children, Mary Kulig and her husband, John, Hazleton; Joseph Lopo, Hazleton; and Lisa Budgeon and her husband, Wilson “Jay,” Hazle Twp.; four grandchildren, Timothy Budgeon, Lindsay (Kulig) Mossa and her husband, Joseph, Daniel Lopo and his fiancée, Brittany Major, and Ryan Kulig; four great-grandchildren, Hunter Budgeon, Gianna and Gabriella Mossa and Angela Mossa; and one brother, Leo Lopo and his wife, Angie, Drums. Mark L. Szumilo, 57, passed away in Stafford Hospital, Stafford, Va., on Feb. 11 after a prolonged illness.

Born Feb. 15, 1960, he was the son of Marcella Arendash Szumilo. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard C., in 2004.

After relocating to Stafford, he obtained his journeyman’s license through the Local 26 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, working out of Washington, D.C.

Prior to relocating, he was employed by Barrett-Haentjens (Hazleton Pumps) for 23 years.

His hobbies included shooting pool, playing in the McAdoo/Hazleton 8-Ball League. He also played softball in the Hazleton Modified League.

He was a graduate of West Hazleton High School, Class of 1978.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Kathleen Szumilo Felker and partner, Jeff Broad, Reading; and brothers, Robert, Hazle Twp.; and Matthew and his wife, Dixie, Conyngham.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate his Mass on Friday at 10 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton. A reception by the family will be held one hour prior to the Mass. Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Drums, immediately following the Mass.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late Joseph and Dolores (Mondel) Chismer, and lived in Hazle Twp. for most of her life.

She was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church, Harwood, and enjoyed studying the Word of God.

Surviving are her beloved husband, Olavo Almeida, to whom she had been married for the past 22 years; children, Michael and Antonio and Megan and Maria Almeida; a stepson, Christopher; and one brother, Albert Chismer and his wife, Shelly, Ellington, Fla. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life service, to be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Full Gospel Fellowship Church, with her pastor, Eleanor DelBalso, officiating.

Mary Ellen Wackley, 79, of Drums, passed away Thursday in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

She was born in Hazleton, the daughter of the late Andrew and Susan Yurko Glowatch, and resided in Drums for most of her life.

Prior to her retirement, Mary Ellen was employed as a secretary by All Steel Corp. in Valmont Industrial Park and as a secretary for attorney Joseph McCluskey.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents were her husband, Henry Wackley, who died Jan. 6, 2010.

She is survived by her beloved sons, Chris Wackley and his wife, Linda, Drums; Randy Wackley and his partner, Maryann Lapinsky, Hazle Twp.; and her beloved granddaughter, Lauren Wackley, Drums. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Good Shepherd Church, Drums, with the Rev. Connell A McHugh, as celebrant. Joann M. Sterenchock, 63, of Hazle Twp. passed away Thursday at home.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of Dorothy (Sypeck) Sterenchock of Hazle Twp. and the late Marvin Sterenchock, who died in June 1990.

Joann graduated from West Hazleton High School, Class of 1972, and Lackawanna Junior College.

She was last employed by the Growing Years Day Care Center in Conyngham.

Surviving, in addition to her beloved mother, Dorothy, are her beloved son, Brian Sterenchock and his wife, Brenda, Drums; her sister, Karen Gehrig and her husband, Roy, Vernon, N.J.; her brother, Thomas Sterenchock and his wife, Denise, Sugarloaf Twp.; her beloved grandsons, Braylon, Brady and Bryce; and an aunt, Elizabeth Sukol, West Hazleton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Estelle R. Chulock, 97, of West Hazleton passed away Wednesday at St. Luke Pavilion, Hazleton, where she was a guest.

She was born in West Hazleton, daughter of the late Walter and Caroline (Zych) Ryba, and resided in West Hazleton for all of her life.

She was a graduate of West Hazleton High School, Class of 1939, and St. Mary’s Hospital, Hoboken, N.J., where she studied nursing.

Estelle was a registered nurse and retired from the White Haven Center, and also had worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hazleton, where she was on staff as an R.N., and also did private duty nursing.

Estelle was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, the Public Health Nurses of Greater Hazleton and the Hazleton Area Center for Slavic Studies.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Michael Chulock, on March 14, 2003; her brothers, Stephen, John, Edward, Anthony, Joseph and Henry; and her sisters, Helen Sivar, Mary Skurka, Mildred Thornton, Jenny Lashock and Blanche Steffen.

Surviving are her beloved children, Mrs. Allan (Marita) Davis, Landenberg; Michele Beam and her partner, Trish D’Arcangelo, Medon, Mass.; and Michael M. Chulock, Bloomsburg; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; and one great-great-granddaughter. Also surviving is one sister, Irene Kakalecik, Edison, N.J. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Gralinda M. Enright

Gralinda M. Enright, 80, of Hazleton passed away on Thursday Nov. 9th after a short illness. Born in Manila, Philippines, on Nov. 16, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Pedro and Graciana Cruz Mendoza.

Gralinda graduated from the University of the Philippines in Foreign Service. She was a devoted Catholic and was a member of St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church and Catholics for Life. She immigrated to the United States in 1970 and proudly received her American citizenship in 1975. She raised her family in Allentown and Hazleton. A retired life insurance agent, Gralinda was active in Hazleton politics and was an avid editorial writer. She was a member of the Republican Committee and was passionate about her work for the Hazleton Home Rule Study Commission.

Gralinda and Richard Enright were married in 1978, and together they raised a large family.

Surviving are her six children: Redentor de Jesus, Barbara Bonsell, Romeo de Jesus, Maris Zita Fuchick, Dr. Rowena De Jesus, and John de Jesus; and four step-children: Patrick Enright, Richard Enright, Robert Enright and Michael Enright. Also surviving are three brothers, three sisters, and 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grand children.

She is predeceased by her spouse, Richard; her former spouse, Romeo; grandson, Paul, and five siblings.

Gralinda was extremely proud of her children, she loved her family deeply, and prayed for each one of them unceasingly. Her generous and welcoming spirit helped the lives of many people in need. She loved being surrounded by people and enjoyed dancing, singing, cooking Filipino food for large crowds, and was often the life of the party.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Gabriel’s R.C. Church, with the Rev. Peter O’Rourke as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Gabriel’s Cemetery. No public viewing is scheduled.

Helen B. Warenda of The Laurels Senior Living Community, formerly of West Hazleton, passed away Friday morning at St. Luke Pavilion, Hazleton.

Born in Cranberry, Hazle Twp., she was the daughter of the late Marcin and Katarzyna (Przevosnik) Warenda.

She worked in the garment industry until her retirement. An avid gardener, she continued her love of flowers working at Smith’s Flower and Garden Center, West Hazleton, until December 2013.

Helen, a prolific artist, studied under Charles Burkhart and the late Nanci Katchmer and Dennis Manjone.

She was very active in Transfiguration Church, Holy Name of Jesus Parish, as a member of the Sodality, St. Cecilia’s Choir and the church cleaning group.

She was the secretary of the Greater Hazleton Area Polonaise Society for many years. Helen, along with her sisters, Blanche and Jean, kept the love of the Polish traditions alive within their family and friends.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her sisters, Mary Ogorzalek and Anna, Blanche and Jean Warenda, and brothers, Henry and Michael Warenda, Stanley and Walter Veranda and Frank Varenda.

Surviving are her nieces, Kathy (Robert) Rovnack, Florida; Liz Hoegg and Margi (John) Ackerman; nephews, Walter (Joy) Veranda, Florida; Matthew (Lisa) Ogorzalek, Maryland; Thomas (Carol) Ogorzalek and Richard Veranda; several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and a great-great-great niece.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Transfiguration Church, Holy Name of Jesus Parish, West Hazleton.

Lucille G. Zukowski, 95, of Hazleton passed away Wednesday in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

She was born in West Hazleton, daughter of the late Felix and Catherine (Domin) Neveras and lived in the area all of her life.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Peoples First National Bank, Hazleton, as a supervisor of training.

Lucille was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Hazleton.

During her retirement, she enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and she also enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, board games and dice games. She lived for her family and loved to entertain family and friends in her home. She never forgot a birthday and was generous to everyone she knew. Lucille was a kind, creative and generous woman and will be sadly missed.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were a daughter, Katherine, in 1992; four brothers, Francis, Anthony, William and Peter; and three sisters, Anna Leonard, Veronica McGeehan, and Marguerite Barto. She was the last survivor of her parents and siblings.

Surviving are her beloved children, Joseph Zukowski, Washington, Utah; Beth Zukowski, West Hazleton; Lawrence Zukowski and his wife, Connie, Zelienople; and Odette Ashby, Hazleton; and one grandson, John C. Ashby, Hazleton. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Dolores Skitzki, 85, of Hazle Twp. passed away Wednesday at the Pavilion at St. Luke Village, Hazleton, where she was a guest.

She was born in West Hazleton, daughter of the late Stanley and Adele (Ankudovich) Skitzki, and resided in the area for all of her life.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed in the area garment industry as a bagger and folder.

Dolores was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was a sister, Ruth Alansky.

Surviving are her beloved sister and brother-in-law, also her caregivers, Cecelia Wittig and her husband, Dale, Hazle Twp.; niece, Joan Wittig; and nephew, Daniel Wittig and his wife, Gloria.

John P. Fucci

July 24, 2017

John P. Fucci, 66, a resident of the Patrician and formerly of West Hazleton, passed away Monday in Lehigh Valley Hosptial — Cedar Crest, surrounded by his family after a brief illness.

Born Jan. 27, 1951, he was the son of the late John J and Lucille M. Corby Fucci and resided in Hazleton his entire life.

He was a 1969 graduate of Hazleton High School and the Hazleton Area Vo-Tech. He was employed by Genova Inc. for more than 30 years until his retirement in 2007.

John was active in the military, retiring in 1990 as a staff sergeant for 412 Engineer Lincalis USAR Unit, West Hazleton. He was an avid supporter of all branches of the military especially the Disabled Veterans.

John was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Most Precious Blood Church.

John enjoyed spending time with his family, watching John Wayne movies and listening to the oldies. Having no children of his own, he doted on his nieces and nephews and was always there to help them in any way he could.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, John (Jack) Krauzlis; and a niece, Tracey J. Krauzlis Fox.

He is survived by sisters, Theresa M. Krauzlis, West Hazleton; Ann Marie Schmidt and husband, Frank, Sugarloaf Twp.; niece, Renita A. Hudock; West Hazleton; and nephew, David J. Boock, Hazleton. The following great-nieces and great-nephews also survive him; Michael J. Fox, Terria L. Hudock, Shelby Boock, Miranda J. Fox and Tyler J. Hudock. He is also survived by his furry best friend “Benny,” who he would always sneak extra treats to.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hazleton Animal Shelter or the Disabled American Veterans Association.

Theresa A. Kukol, 84, formerly of West Hazleton, and who resided in Conyngham, passed away Friday morning at St. Luke Manor, Hazleton, where she was a brief guest.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late Nicholas and Theresa (Milora) Gerone, and resided in West Hazleton for most of her life.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed in the area garment industry as a folder, and was a member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union.

Theresa was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

She was an avid reader, enjoyed puzzles and was a lifelong animal lover, but most of all she enjoyed her great-grandchildren, who were her “Love Bugs.”

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were two sisters, Gertrude Pell and Doris Pisarz.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 64 years, James R. Kukol; her beloved children, Kathleen Boris and her husband, Bernard, with whom she resided; George Kukol and his wife, Michele, Delmont; and James Kukol Jr. and his wife, Patricia, Eagle Rock; seven grandchildren, Derek Boris and his wife, Rebecca, Alyssa Diroll and her husband, J.P., Brittany Boris, Nicholas and Kristen Kukol and David and Deanna; and four great-grandchildren, Carter Boris, Kaylee Diroll, Morgan Brittany and Connor. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Helen J. Stratchko, 90, formerly of West Hazleton, passed away Tuesday morning at St. Luke Manor, Hazleton, where she was a guest.

She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late Ignatius and Anna (Bankowski) Pawlowski, and resided in West Hazleton for most of her life.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed in the area garment industry for more than 30 years as a trimmer, and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

Helen was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Joseph B. Stratchko, in June 2004; a sister, Dorothy Latanshyn; and two brothers, Charles and John Pawlowski.

Surviving are her three beloved children, Kathleen Van Blargan and her husband, Dennis, West Hazleton, and her caregivers, Diane Sist, Tresckow, and David Stratchko and his wife, Kristin, White Haven; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eileen Mardyniak, Zion Grove. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Her funeral will be held Friday at 9:45 a.m. from Hilary J. Bonin Funeral Home, 99 W. Green St., West Hazleton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton.

Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Drums.

Martha Benyo

Martha Benyo, 62, of Mountain Top passed away peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by her children on Monday in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Twp.

Born in Lancaster on Oct. 22, 1954, Marty was the daughter of the late Dr. William Huss and Anna Mary Huss (Rohrer).

She was employed as a licensed practical nurse until her retirement.

After retirement, she enjoyed knitting, gardening, playing with her grandchildren as well as volunteering at local organizations to help others. Marty also enjoyed caring for her beloved golden retriever, Johnny.

She is survived by four loving children, Philip Benyo and wife, Maria, Drums; Anna Benyo and husband, Hanif, Washington, D.C.; Breslin Morel and husband, Nicholas, Plaistow, N.H.; and Dr. Daniel Benyo and wife, Nicole, Mountain Top. Also surviving are her seven grandchildren, Philip Benyo, Jack Benyo, Daniel Benyo, Gavin Bagwandeen, Emily Benyo, Julien Morel and Willow Bagwandeen, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Marty is also survived by her sisters, Susan Lescinsky, Pittsburgh; Mary Ann Hoisington, Morrisville, Vt.; and Nancy Urso, Harrisburg.

Marty was preceded in death by her brother, William Huss.

John M. Swiech, 74, of Cranberry passed away Monday at his home.

He was born in Hazle Twp., son of the late John and Mary (Dzialo) Swiech, and resided in his home for all of his life.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a carpenter in the area.

John was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton, and he was known for his love of canaries.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were three grandsons, Hunter, Hayden and Harry; a sister, Mary Galski; and four brothers, Joseph, Edmund, Richard and Daniel.

Surviving are his beloved wife and caregiver, the former Margie Toll, to whom he was married for 27 years; daughters, Alisa, Amy and Marnie; granddaughters, Isis, Aja and Lyndsay; and sisters, Dorothy Kules, Joan Jones and Bernadine Hornick. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Surviving are her son, Richard Mazurkiwecz and his wife, Barbara; three grandchildren, Matthew, Okinawa, Japan, and his wife, Lori; Mark and his wife, Jeannine, Sugarloaf Twp.; and Amy Connelly and her husband, John, Midland, Va.; and two great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Mason Mazurkiwecz, Sugarloaf Twp.
