The City Council voted unanimously May 25 to create a legal holiday honoring Evers, who would have turned 74 on July 2. Evers, who served as NAACP field secretary, was slain in the driveway of his Jackson home on June 12, 1963. Byron De La Beckwith was convicted of his murder 31 years later. City Clerk Eddie Jean Carr said Wednesday morning she had received 13 calls opposing the holiday and six calls wanting it held on a separate day.

Deputy City Clerk Linda Brune said the day after the council declared the citywide holiday, she received 17 calls in a one-hour period. Brune said she now receives roughly a half dozen calls a day. Some of the calls were from veterans who are concerned that celebrating the holidays jointly diluted the importance of Independence Day, Brune said. Caller Sam Leonard believes Evers deserves a holiday. However, instead of Independence Day, it could be held on 1 Dr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day. "This is not a racist issue with me," Leonard said. "It's just a shame for the holidays to be mixed up together. To me, it just takes something away from what Evers did." Council President Bo Brown said the council selected July 4 rather than Evers' birthday, partly because of the cost associated with giving people a day off on July 2.

A bill to create a state holiday died in a legislative subcommittee this year. State auditor orders former Tunica sheriff to repay funds By DeShuna Moore Clarion-Ledger Staff Writer State Auditor Phil Bryant announced Wednesday that after a nine-month investigation his office has issued a formal demand against former Tunica County Sheriff John J. Pickett and his bonding company. The $16,148.90 demand, which includes interest and cost of recovery, is for repayment of funds unaccounted for during a portion of Pickett's term as sheriff. The investigation came about after a complaint was made and recorded at the state auditor's office, said Langston Moore, director of public relations in the state auditor's office.

Pickett, who served nine years in office, said, "I haven't heard about (the demand). I have no comment." The investigation by the auditor's office "discovered numerous instances of unaccounted funds during Mr. Pickett's term of office," Bryant said in a prepared statement. "Mr. Pickett is responsible for the repayment of these funds and I am confident that these funds will be collected and returned to Tunica County." Pickett, who resigned March 1 as Tunica County's sheriff, will have 30 days to repay the money.

If he does not, the case will be turned over to the attorney general's office. In March, Pickett pleaded guilty to a federal extortion charge after he approved bonds from a Tunica bail bonding company in return for 20 percent of the premium on each bond. BALDWIN-LEE MRS.
