Sky's Sketches and Scribbles (2024)

I did this one a couple months back and simply forgot to post it. Ah well, better late than never, I suppose.

Not sure why, just wanted to draw gryphons, or griffins if you prefer. And don't ask why two of them turned into Gilda, because it they just did XD As I was doodling, it just turned into me drawing a few stages of how I see a gryphon going from a hatchling to a fully grown adult. Kind of wish I had the room to add a more elderly depiction, but another time, perhaps.Gryphon culture, as I imagine it, can be seen as rather diverse based on the differing cities within the gryphon nation, ranging from a focus of the arts and knowledge to others are more militaristic, focusing on the art of combat and physical prowess (due to the gryphon nation being mainly composed of rocky and mountainous terrain, many civilized areas are rather far apart from each other, creating such differences). Despite these rather drastic differences in values, their is a mutual respect among all citizens, with the acceptance that each mindset is just one essential part to their nation's greatness, where one cannot survive without the other. It is also a common practice for gryphon young to go on a pilgrimage of sorts (often known as the Endless Flight), meant not to only experience what the other cities have to offer, but also to allow them to learn more about themselves as well and further discover what goals they wish to pursue in their lifetimes. Though this journey is not mandatory or seen as any sort of rite of passage, it is considered an important experience of discovery and gain a more cultural awareness and appreciation. If anyone is actually interested, I'll add more of an explanation both on what I mentioned above, but also more of the gryhpon life cycle. For now, I'm rather short on time, so I'll just go with an abridged version. For the record, I see females actually being larger than the males.Left side (top): Bust of gryphon male, depicted with long beak, smaller eyes and larger color patterns on head.Left side (bottom): Bust of gryphon female, with a shorter beak compared to males, slightly larger eyes, less distinctive patterns on head with the exception around the eyes.Going in order:Top Middle: Hatchling, where there are no feathers present (with the exception of a few specks growing here and there) on the front half of the body and a thin layer of fur on the back half. Very frail and extremely sensitive to extreme climate changes due to having no sort of protection or insulation on the front half of their bodies. Clutch size is about 3-5 eggs.Top Right: Nestling (24-36 months), with feather growth much more apparent and fuller, often causing the young gryphon to have a fluffy or puffed up appearance. Primary and secondary feathers will not being to develop fully until about the age of six.Middle: Fledgling (7-9 years), ready to make their first flight with their now fully developed wings. This is often seen as a rite of passage for all gryphons and momentously celebrated upon completion, as this is also the time in a gryphon's life cycle that sees the highest mortality rates, with as many as 60% - 70% of young fledglings not surviving to make a second attempt if they fail in their first. At the age of 13, a fledgling is given the choice of undergoing the Endless Flight.Bottom Right: Mature (considered late teen/young adult: 17-20), nearly fully developed physically, a mature gryphon is seen as a fully-fledged member of gryphon society. Their life is their own to choose, whether it be to find their place among their own kind or to take flight and explore beyond their nation's borders.

Not shown: Elderly (55+)

Initially, I did have the intention of adding a more elderly gryphon in there but I simply ran out of room as I began filling the page, as I was drawing what immediately came to mind rather than having any structure or foresight. Perhaps I'll update this at some point with a bit more planning so I can actually fit everything in XDAnyway, as I see it, gryphons have an average lifespan of approximately 75 years, with distinct coloration changes/fading in feathers and body fur occurring in early to mid 50s among other signs of aging, which can include feathers unkempt due to parallel barbs deteriorating (along with lowered energy can making basic flight difficult to nearly impossible), feather lose, etc. One of the few features that shows little to no changes due to age would be eye sight (I don't know enough about the eye sight itself to go into specifics here to explain further, unfortunately). There are also differences that occur between males and females, where the feathers along the neck will gain a slightly puffed up look (especially on the front half) while the females' feather will thin out a bit but overall will see little change. As we are talking about elderly gryphons, it would also be necessary to discuss how death and how such ceremonies are handled within the gryphon culture. Gryphons are close-knit in family ties but are, by nature, very proud creatures, rarely showing any sort of weakness to another unless necessity dictates it. This mindset also extends to natural deaths, where they do not wish for those they love to discover them in such a state, but for their last memory of the deceased to be when they were among the living and happier times. As a gryphon's time is coming to an end, it can be felt by a sort of intuition, signalling that their death is drawing near. Upon this feeling occurring, it is customary for the gryphon to place one of their primary feathers upon their pillow to signify to significant others what is about to happen, as well as to leave a personal memento for the family. Beyond this, they will say nothing to their loved ones or friends before departing and immediately take one final flight towards what they know is isolated or unpopulated areas (often mountains, dense forests or a large body of water/ocean) and fly until their bodies cannot take them any further, where they will pass away where they land. There are exceptions and specific ceremonies are performed for those who are killed in battle or in an accident, or those that are disabled in some manner so that they are respected properly.

Thank you guys giving this a read, as I know it is a bit long. There is more that I wish to add to this, but I think I've probably taken too much time to begin with XD However, if anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask ^^ Take care everyone!
